  • DESIRED AUDIENCE ARE CHILDREN AGES 7 TO 10.
  • THIS WAS THE MOST UNIQUE PRODUCT IDEA WE CAME UP WITH. WE

CHOSE TO CREATE THIS PRODUCT SO THAT CHILDREN COULD HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ASSEMBLE A MARBLE ROLLER COASTER AND DESIGN A UNIQUE TRACK TO THE EXTENT OF THEIR IMAGINATION.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

  • This design arose from sketching our idea of

a marble track. We wanted to create a design that had a working conveyor belt so that the roller coaster would work continuously.

  • Subsequent design iterations altered the

base of the toy and fleshed out the conveyor belt.

ACTUAL MODEL

  • WHAT DID WE BUILD?

A 1’ : ¼” SCALED MODEL OF OUR TOY

  • WHY WE BUILT IT?
  • SO WE WOULDN’T HAVE TO USE THE WORKSHOP AS

MUCH AS THE OTHER GROUPS.

  • WE CAN USE THE MODEL TO GIVE THE GENERAL

OUTLINE OF OUR TOY, WHERE THE CAD DESIGN WOULD SHOW THE DETAILS.

  • HOW WE BUILT IT?
  • WE LASER CUT THE CENTRAL SUPPORT, THE BASE,

AND THE CONVEYOR BELT FLAPS. WE USED STRAWS FOR THE PVC TRACK, A RUBBER BAND FOR THE CONVEYOR BELT, AN WE 3D PRINTED THE MARBLE CATCHER.

  • ALL THE PIECES ARE ATTACHED TO EACH OTHER

USING WOOD GLUE AND SUPER GLUE.

FEEDBACK

  • OUR CUSTOMERS THOUGHT THE IDEA WAS COOL FOR SIX YEAR OLDS.
  • BRYCE'S LITTLE BROTHER SAID HE WOULD PLAY WITH THE TOY.
  • ALEX'S LITTLE BROTHER SAID HE WOULD DEFINITELY BUY THE TOY.

Results

  • In our CAD model we were able to successfully make the

crankshaft, which will drive the conveyor belt, rotate between the bearings.

COST AND TIME ESTIMATES

  • THE MODEL MATERIALS COST WAS $36.72 OR $14.40 PER MODEL.
  • THE MATERIALS FOR 1000 UNITS WOULD COST $27,670
  • WE WOULD ASK $120.00 FOR ONE TOY.
  • DESIGNING THE TOY AND BUILDING THE TOY MODEL TOOK 41 MAN-HOURS OF
  • WORK. MUCH OF THIS TIME WAS SPENT ON THE CAD DESIGN.

SUMMARY

  • THROUGH THE ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS, WE CREATED A TOY THAT

CHALLENGES ITS USERS TO BUILD A PATH FOR A MARBLE TO REACH A CATCHER.

  • THIS TOY ENABLES CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN CHILDREN AND FORCES

THEM TO CONSTRUCT A MARBLE COASTER USING BUILDING SKILLS AND THEIR IMAGINATION.
