  8. Optimal Healing Environment • Optimal Healing Environment means that space or place where certain internal, interpersonal, behavioral and external elements come together to facilitate healing and the achievement of health. Swanson (2004). 8

  9. Evidence-Based Design • Evidence-Based Design means the process of (1) building an interdisciplinary team; (2) conducting an investigation; (3) benchmarking findings against national initiatives; and (4) documenting the process. Cama (2009). 9

Human Centered Design • Human Centered Design means those processes used by innovators to “explore the way people live, what they think and how they feel about things” before the innovators can truly understand the nature of the problem and the possible value of a new or modified item or service that is being considered. McCreary (2010). 10

Design Thinking • Design Thinking means that process, often referred to as “co-creation” that involves four very basic questions: • What is (which explores the current reality)? • What if (which envisions possibilities, a new future)? • What wows (which results in some choices)? • What works (which takes the choices into the marketplace)? Liedtka and Ogilvie (2011). 11

  12. Health • Health has been defined across generations, cultures and health perspectives to mean (1) the absence of illness or injury: (2) the capacity to adapt; (3) functional health; and (4) happiness and personal well-being. Smith (1981). 12

Health Literacy • Health Literacy means the degree to which an individual has the capacity to obtain, communicate, process and understand basic health information and services to make appropriate health decisions. Patient Protection and Accountable Care Act (2010). Three goals: (1) provide access to information; (2) • deliver person-centered information and services; and (3) support lifelong learning and skills necessary for health. HHS Plan (2010). 13

  14. Universal Care Platform • The Universal Care Platform means a centrally located space that can perform a range of functions, as necessary, using flexible use of persons, spaces and processes. Cama (2009). 14
