The Presider Says Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Gloria (8:30 spoken, 10:00 sung) H S280 Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. 3 Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Collect of the Day Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Let us pray. Almighty and everliving God, we humbly pray that, as your only- begotten Son was this day presented in the temple, so we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts by Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. A Reading from the prophet Malachi 3:1-4

1See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me,

and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. 2But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; 3he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants

  • f Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present
  • fferings to the LORD in righteousness. 4Then the offering of Judah

and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

4 Psalm 84 Said responsively

1 How dear to me is your dwelling, O God of hosts! *

My soul has a desire and longing for your courts; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.

2 The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where

she may lay her young, * by the side of your altars, O God of hosts, my Ruler and my God.

3 Happy are they who dwell in your house; *

they will always be praising you.

4 Happy are the people whose strength is in you, *

whose hearts are set on the pilgrims’ way.

5 Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of

springs, * for the early rains have covered it with pools of water.

6 They will climb from height to height; *

the God of gods will be revealed in Zion.

7 O God of hosts, hear my prayer; *

hearken, O God of Jacob.

8 Behold our defender, O God, *

and look upon the face of your Anointed,

9 For one day in your courts is better than a thousand

in my own room, * and to stand at the threshold of the house of my God than to dwell in the tents of the wicked;

10 For God is both sun and shield *

and will give grace and glory.

happy are they who put their trust in you! A Reading from Paul's letter to the Hebrews. 2:14-18

14Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, [Jesus]

himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. 16For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. 17Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people.

18Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to

help those who are being tested. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Gospel Hymn Canticle 17 : “The Song of Simeon” H S260 Holy Gospel Luke 2:22-40 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

22When the time came for their purification according to the law of

Moses, [Mary and Joseph] brought [Jesus] up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23(as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”),

24and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law

  • f the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

25Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the

6 consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law,

28Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, 29“Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,

according to your word;

30for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32a light for revelation to the Gentiles

and for glory to your people Israel.” 33And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising

  • f many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35so that the

inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.” 36There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. 39When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.

40The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the

favor of God was upon him. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rev. Susanna DesMarais The Nicene Creed said in unison We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

slide-7
SLIDE 7

  • f all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

  • f one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People Deacon Let us pray to God through Christ who is our Light and Life. Leader O God, your Christ is acclaimed as the glory of Israel: Look in mercy on your Church, sharing his light. Lord, have

  • mercy. Christ, have mercy.
slide-8
SLIDE 8

8 O God, your Christ in his temple brings judgement on the world: Look in mercy on the nations, who long for his justice. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. O God, your Christ, who was rich, for our sakes became poor: Look in mercy on the needy, suffering with him. Lord, have

  • mercy. Christ, have mercy.

O God, your Christ is the one in whom faithful servants find their peace: Look in mercy on the departed, who see your salvation. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. O God, your Christ is revealed as the one destined to be rejected: Look in mercy on us who now turn towards his passion. Lord, have

  • mercy. Christ, have mercy.

God, help us to bring forth the ideas, goals, dreams and needs that will serve our congregation and this church. Help us to speak through you, that we may choose our spiritual leader to guide us as we move forward. Help us to accomplish this task, that we may be united in our goals and successful in our endeavors to serving you. Through Christ we pray, Amen Your prayers are invited either silently or aloud at this time. Presider: Lord God, you kept faith with Simeon and Anna and showed them the infant King. Give us grace to put all our trust in your promises, and the patience to wait for their fulfilment; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Confession of Sin All kneel. Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done,

slide-9
SLIDE 9

9 and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Priest stands and says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace Announcements

The people stand. Offertory Anthem “Blest are they” Choir Doxology “Praise God from whom all blessings flow” Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give thanks and praise. God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. Glory to you for ever and ever. At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. By your will they were created and have their being.

SLIDE 10

10 From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers

  • f creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust;

and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight. Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to

  • pen for us the way of freedom and peace.

By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed. And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn Sanctus H S130 Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The people stand OR kneel. The Presider continues And so, God, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these

  • gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood
  • f Jesus Christ our Lord.

On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

SLIDE 11

11 Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming. Lord God and Father of our Savior Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread. Accept these prayers and praises, O God, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to

  • generation. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

  • n earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread A period of silence is kept. This is the true bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Whoever eats this bread will live for ever. The Gifts of God for the People of God.

12 Everyone is welcome to the sacrament of the Lord’s Table. If you need communion brought to you, please let the usher(s) know. After Communion, the Presider says Let us pray. Said in unison Lord, you fulfilled the hope of Simeon and Anna, who did not die until they welcomed the Messiah. May we, who have received these your gifts beyond words prepare to meet Christ Jesus when he comes to bring us eternal life; for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

  • ne God, now and for ever. Amen.

Blessing Christ the Son of God, born of Mary, fill you with his grace to trust his promises and obey his will; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen. Closing Hymn “How lovely is they dwelling place” H 517 Dismissal & Postlude

United Thank Offering Time Ingathering February 23

We are in a new year and it’s important to remember our baptism, to remember we are light and love and we seek out how we might show that. This year 2020 is an opportunity to believe that we are enough! We have enough! We are capable of being light and love. We are surrounded by the light and love of

  • Christ. United Thank Offering has shone out in the darkness for
  • ver 130 years thanks to all of us sharing the light and love

through the radical act of giving thanks Please see the display and pick up your blue box in the foyer. If you have any questions, contact Nancy Machmer at namach2020@gmail.com or 618-704-4231. Adult Forum: Grateful A film series with Diana Butler Bass Continues through Sunday February 23 9:15 in the Parish Hall: These 6 films contain conversations inspired by Diana Butler Bass’ book, Grateful: The Transformative Power of Giving Thanks. In her book, Diana not only offers us an opportunity for a personal and systemic transformation, but welcomes us into her own personal journey with gratitude. My hope and prayer is that these films lead you to a deeper truth in your spiritual growth and inspire you to move outward into the world with the kind of generosity and gratitude that defies systems of scarcity and brings healing to the

  • world. (From The Work of the People website)

Please welcome a missioner from St. Matthew’s today at the 10:30 am worship. A trip to the Dominican Republic is coming and to raise funds they are inviting all of us to a special Dominican Dinner at St. Matthew’s. Flyers are available in the Foyer and the missioner will stay to talk with you after the worship.

16 Jean Davie has now moved permanently to Hebron. We are also planning a Jean Davie Day on Sunday February 16th, weather and health permitting Jean will be with us. Please bring pictures and stories about Jean and we will celebrate her ministry and life with Holy Trinity at the 10:30 am service and afterwards with a cake reception. We also want to encourage you to write her a note or a card: the new address is Jean Davie, Blue Valley Lutheran Home, 220 Park Ave. Box 166, Hebron, NE 68370.

Lectors & Chalice Bearers Needed for 10:30 am Worship

Do you love to read? Out loud? Or perhaps

you would like to share the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist with your church friends. We need a few of you to step up and take on these responsibilities at the 10:30 am worship

  • n Sundays. Rev. Susanna will train and orient you to your new

ministry to this community. The most common reaction of new lectors and chalice bearers is surprise at how much more the worship means when they are actively engaged in it.

Greeters/Ushers Also Needed for 10:30 am Worship

Ushers and greeters are the first people encountered when you enter the church for services. They are the face of Holy Trinity in a very tangible way. It is truly hard to overestimate their ministry. Thanks to all our parishioners who served as ushers and greeters for Sunday worship services, funerals and special services during 2019, we have lost several people and need some new faces to help in 2020! Please contact the Office or Rev. Susanna if you can help with any

  • r all of these very important ministries!
