  • 18.6% of African American adults are living with a mental health condition.
  • One in five children ages 13-18 have, or will have a serious mental illness at some

time during their life.

  • One-half of all chronic mental illness begins by the age of 14 and three-fourths

begins by the age of 24.

  • Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in youth ages 10 - 24.
  • The NAMI hotline, which is one national resource for mental health, received on

average over 60 calls every day for information and help regarding mental health during 2016.

  • JJOA will sponsor a newly created Silence the Shame national teen tour for teens in 7 key

JJOA markets -- Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Washington, New York, and Los Angeles. Objective: Partner with Silence the Shame and NAMI to increase mental health awareness in the AA YOUTH community and create a forum for education, information sharing and open dialogue for Teens.   • The Children's Crusade was a march by students in Birmingham, Alabama, May 2–5,

1963, during the Civil Rights Movement's Birmingham campaign.

  • More than 1,000 African American children gathered and took to the streets to protest

an American students walked out of their classrooms on the segregation and racism in Birmingham.

The Facts:

  • The Children’s Crusade resulted in police chief Bull Connor unleashing dogs and fire

hose attacks on the children. Hundreds were arrested for truancy and public disturbance.

  • Police arrested 600 child picketers (some as young as six years of age);

by the next day, 1,000 children had been jailed!

  • The violence raised a nationwide public outcry, hastening integration in America's

most segregated city….and it was led by CHILDREN!
