This is Klara

  • She is 17 years old
  • Lives in Stockholm, Sweden
  • Attends high school
  • Active water polo player
  • Lives a normal life with her friends and

family But something is a bit different…

slide-3
SLIDE 3

Klara has diabetes

Makes a ton of difference:

  • Not only regarding her health, but how she

can live her life and how she can travel

  • The rest of us can on impulse go to a

neighboring country with only “a passport and a credit card”

  • Klara can do the same, but in addition she

would have had to plan – and plan again – to make sure she have everything in need in case of emergency

  • Health records, emergency phone

numbers, extra medication, extra equipment, ….

slide-4

Wouldn’t it be great if we could help Klara live a life very much like everyone else? It’s up to us!

The Nordics, a perfect “test bed” for cross border patient mobility

  • 5 countries
  • A small corner of the world
  • 27 million inhabitants
  • Long common history
  • Similar languages
  • Nordic Welfare Model
  • Trust based societies

The starting point

  • Lots have been said about

Nordic cross border patient mobility…

  • …but little has actually

happened!

  • Now is the time to act!

The founding partners “Bottom up approach”

Kalevi Virta Malin Söderlund Jan E. Larsson Petter Østbye

Why is this project different?

  • Industry initiated project
  • Focus on one region (the

Nordics) and one disease at the time

  • Open ecosystem for anyone

wanting to contribute

  • Strong support from different
  • rganizations
slide-8
SLIDE 8

The ambition is set high! “In 2030 the Nordics will be the most sustainable and integrated health region in the world, providing the best possible personalized health care for all its citizens.”

This ambition is not set by us. This ambition is already set by the Nordic Council

  • f Ministers/Nordic Innovation. We have only adapted it and want to make this

vision come to live.

Meet Alva

Meet Alva

  • Our “persona” representing the future

situation where cross border patient mobility and our vision is a reality

  • Still a patient with diabetes.
  • Still needs to plan for her life and her

travels.

  • But all of the Nordics feels like being “at

home” for her as a patient

  • Her personalized patient data is

accessible whenever they are needed wherever in the Nordics

Nordic Interoperability Project Case Alva

Our goal To enable patients to live and act in an open, seamless, cross-border healthcare ecosystem, by showcasing world class solutions and innovations from the Nordics.

Closing the gap between Klara of today and Alva of tomorrow

  • The physical showcase will be the foundation
  • Show possible solutions and spark discussions

«Tetra helix approach»:

  • Industry/Clusters
  • Public Healthcare
  • Government
  • Patients

X-year perspective

= pain point

Foundation: Interoperability showcase solutions

WP1: Technical pain points WP2: Regulatory pain points WP3: Legal pain points WP4: Commercial and financial pain points WP5: Cultural pain points Other… Alva 202X

slide-13
SLIDE 13

Guiding principles:

  • All 5 Nordic countries will be involved in the project
  • Representation from all parties in a tetra helix approach; industry,

government, public healthcare, patients

  • Showcase technical solutions but also address the barriers

hindering “cross border patient mobility” today

  • A Nordic focus (vs. the world), and being a starting point for

showcasing Nordic spearhead solutions and increase focus on Nordic healthcare IT business development.

slide-14

We are starting with Alva…

slide-15
SLIDE 15

…but “if we can make it there, we can make it everywhere”.

  • The learning points will be universal, independent from disease and geographical region
