Demographic shift. It is a remarkable thing. We are experiencing the most rapid change in the nature of human habitat ever seen. Within the next five decades the average size of the world's cities will double, and then they will likely stop growing - potentially forever. Thus the cities we build now will be the cities we may live with, for centuries, perhaps for

  • millennia. As absurd as this

may seem the numbers bear this out. The birthrate is rapidly declining around the world, and even in the absence of any perturbations (wars, plagues, economic collapse) the UN projects that we will hit a population peak somewhere between 9 and 10 billion people, and then stop adding people faster than they

  • die. The reasons are complex

but they can be simplified.

AT THE SAME TIME BIRTHRATES COLLAPSE WORLDWIDE
