The Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre (IOMRC) is a partnership between four organizations with a key role as marine research providers and the Western Australian government to facilitate research, including inputs from disciplines not specifically targeting the marine environment, to address challenges, risks and

• pportunities in the sustainable and safe use of marine resources

and the conservation of the Indian Ocean Biodiversity. The Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre (IOMRC) brings together

subjects, extending from oceanography to marine ecology, fisheries, geochemistry, law and marine technologies and engineering, among

The IOMRC will be the largest marine research institution in the Southern Hemisphere and the largest research capability in marine research in the Indian Ocean Rim

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is Australia's national science agency. The IOMRC component is particularly involved with developing the “Wealth from Oceans” Flagship program, which aims to provide Australians with enduring social, environmental and economic wealth from the nation’s vast ocean territory. The Department of Fisheries in Western Australia manages Western Australia's fish, marine and aquatic resources to world-class standards to conserve, develop and share the fish and other living aquatic resources of WA, for the benefit of present and future generations (www.fish.wa.gov.au). The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS): AIMS is committed to the protection and sustainable use of Australia's marine resources. The IOMRC component has a primary focus on the pristine Ningaloo Marine Park in Western Australia and northwest Australia (www.aims.gov.au). The UWA Oceans Institute brings together the strength of marine researchers at the University of Western Australia into a multidisciplinary, integrated research focus. The goal is to bridge the already existing research strengths in oceanography, ecology, engineering and resource management to further the excellence and relevance of marine research at UWA, and to deliver Ocean Solutions for Humanity’s Grand Challenges (www.oceans.uwa.edu.au). .

Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre

• A total of $63M AU to develop infrastructure: $32M

from Australian Government (Education Infrastructure Fund); $12M from UWA; $10M from CSIRO; $6M from AIMS; $4M from State of WA.

• All UWA, AIMS and CSIRO marine researchers in WA

to be co-located and two facilities to be developed:

• New IOMRC building on the UWA campus to house

240 marine researchers (100 UWA; 80 AIMS; 60 CSIRO)

• Experimental facility for marine research
