Educating Nigerian Girls in New Enterprises (ENGINE) II is a 3 year (April 2017 – March 2020) Adolescent Girls’ Education programme funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) through its Girls’ Education Challenge (GEC) Fund. Mercy Corps leads the implementation of ENGINE II in Nigeria, along with Society for Women Development and Empowerment of Nigeria (SWODEN) in Kano, Action Health Incorporated (AHI) in Lagos, Kindling Hope Across Nations Initiative (KHAN) in Kaduna and Tabitha Cumi Foundation in the Federal Capital Territory.

ENGINE II is an initiative of DFID through Girls Education Challenge (GEC). DFID GEC vision is to improve the lives of a million of the world’s poorest girls through education GOAL: All marginalised Nigerian girls transform their future by fulfilling their potential in education and work. How: By improving learning outcomes through quality teachers delivery, facilitating positive transitions and scale up through sustainability actions. Duration: April 2017-September 2020

Programme Overview

Programme Reach– 18,000 girls across 4 states of FCT Abuja, Kano, Kaduna and Lagos. In 18 Local Government Areas. Targeted Girls – Marginalised in and out of school girls aged between 16 and 24 years who meet ENGINE marginalisation criteria.

WHY AGENCY BANKING?NCLUSION

Beneficiaries of the Educating Nigerian Girls in New Enterprises (ENGINE) II programme fall into 4 out of 5 of the identified categories identified by the CBN Revised NFI strategy ; Youth ,Women, Mostly live in rural areas and in North West Nigeria. Means to engage the private sector to increase appropriate economic

  • pportunities for programme participants.

Strategy to get programme participants financially included as it is critical for income generation. Adding value to communities we work in by providing an avenue for financial inclusion and better access to a financial service provider.

HOW?

➢ Building on existing partnership with Access Bank ➢ Pilot Phase with 22 participants across 5 LGAs in Lagos who where trained and onboarded in November 2018. ➢ Agents provided with branded items and materials for documentation. ➢ Agents have been opening bank accounts for programme participants and

  • ther community members.

➢ Expansion for two agents that have had a high volume of transactions through provision of POS machines for transactions.

IMPACT

Income generation from commissions based on volume of transactions. Agents have opened close to 1,000 accounts. Increased business traffic for Agents with existing businesses. Agency Banking is bringing financial services to participants and programme

  • communities. Agents transactions have ranged from account opening to cash

transfers. The use of Agents has made it easier for participants to make small, regular savings deposits due to the easy reach. The impact of income generation , higher savings is not only felt by the woman but empowers her family and community. Expansion into other states of Kano, Kaduna and FCT Abuja in 2019.
