Why the Supergrid

  • Carbon neutral Europe by 2050.
  • Single European electricity market.
  • Security and sustainability of supply.
  • Transformed energy system.
  • European technology to exploit and

to export.

  • Skilled employment opportunities for

the EU.

What is the Supergrid

The Supergrid is a pan-European transmission network facilitating the integration of large-scale renewable energy and the balancing and transportation of electricity, with the aim of improving the European market.

Future policy and regulatory aspects needed

  • 2050 Supergrid design now:

develop in phases

  • One operator in future: ISO
  • One grid code: Entso-e
  • One regulator: ACER
  • Ownership: TSOs and Investors
  • Technology: mainly HVDC

Supergrid technology: the “SuperNode”

  • The SuperNode links offshore wind

parks to existing onshore networks or to points of consumption through a series

  • f Supernodes located near clusters of
  • ffshore generation connected to load

centres with HVDC VSC (Voltage Source Converter) multi-terminal international links

  • The concept is largely based on

technology available today
