BC Oil & Gas Commission - Overview

  • Established as a Crown Corporation in 1998
  • Independent agency – report to a Board
  • Agent of the Crown – carry government’s responsibility

for First Nations consultation

  • Single-Window Regulatory Agency for upstream oil &

gas activities

  • Comprehensive role on major provincially regulated

projects – issue almost all required permits except EA

  • Pure regulator of oil and gas activities – do not issue

tenures or administer royalties

  • Do not set government policy or legislation

  • Do not have primary jurisdiction – much more limited role

than provincial projects

  • Authority for some specified provincial permitting –
