  2. Survey How many of you prefer to listen to music while you work out? Do you think music enhances your intensity level when you are working out?

  3. Psychological Effects When Listening to Music  Music acts as a distraction from pain and fatigue  More useful with active participants rather than trained  The type of music influences the rate at which physical activity is preformed. Ex: The higher the tempo of the music the more the exerciser attempts synchronize the beat, increasing workout activity and heart-rate.

  4. Studies……  Schwartzmiller, M. (2003). Effects of music tempo on spontaneous cycling performance.  Asked 9 men and 9 women to do a normal cycling workout while music played in the background. Researchers altered the tempo of the music to observe the effects it would have on the cyclist. Pedaling power output changed in sync with the dominant beat frequency of the music that was playing. The increase in the music’s tempo, the more the power output of the cyclist. The results of this experiment showed that music did have an effect on the intensity of the exercisers.  Trained vs. Active

  5. USA Track and Field Banning the use of Electronics  USA Track & Field amended rule 144.3 in the banning of the use of headphones and any electric devices in a championship race.  The rule states "The following shall be considered assistance and therefore not allowed.”  The reasoning for this was to ensure runner’s safety and to prevent them from having an unfair advantage of a competitive edge.

  6. Concluding Thoughts  In reality music is more of a psychological benefit rather than enhancing physiological activity. Music is a distraction from the workout itself, it arouses the mind to motivate the exerciser and create a better overall mood for working out.  Physically music cannot make you lift more, run faster or in any way be a performance enhancer, only motivate a person doing physical activity.
