SLIDE 3 The Freedom to Forget The Freedom to Forget 1 Peter 5:5-7 Pastor John Sloan
- 1. 01. Gospel-humility is spontaneous self-forgetfulness that springs from an
identity firmly rooted in Christ.
- 2. “Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most
people call ‘humble’ nowadays: he will not be a sort of greasy, smarmy person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. Probably all you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him. If you do dislike him it will be because you feel a little envious of anyone who seems to enjoy life so easily. He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all.” C.S. Lewis
- 3. 02. When we take our eyes off ourselves and humbly trust in God, He will honor
us in a way that He deems best.
- 4. “The hope of the Christian faith is dependent on God’s display of strength, not
- urs. God is in the business of destroying our idol of self-sufficiency in order to
reveal himself as our sole sufficiency. This is God’s way—he kills in order to make alive; he strips us in order to give us new clothes. He lays us flat on our back so that we’re forced to look up. God’s office of grace is located at the end of our rope. The thing we least want to admit is the one thing that can set us free: the fact that we’re weak.”
- 5. 03. When we grasp the depth of God’s love for us, we’re freed from the constant
worries about ourselves, and (finally) able to be genuinely concerned about the needs of others.
