Roses in the Desert - Types

Know what you want to plant

  • Hybrid Tea - well-formed, large buds and long, straight stems (dozen from florist)
  • Floribunda - Smaller, bushier and more buds per stem than Hybrid Tea
  • Shrub - similar to floribundas (bushier/more buds) & grows close to ground
  • Miniature -

delicate pruning

  • Climber

Note: Some roses have a fragrance and some don’t. Growers “hybridize” out the scent, so no bees @ nursery

Roses in the Desert – Light Pruning & Shaping

Light Pruning aka “Deadheading” – After 1st bloom

  • Remove old growth from bottom of bush (allows light to penetrate rootball)
  • Find stems where roses buds are either dead, dying or where you want to preserve the bud
  • Look down top of stem to find a healthy 5 leave growth
  • Angle-cut (45 degrees) just above it. That way, water drips off and bacteria doesn’t go into stem

Roses in the Desert – Fertilizer Facts

32

slide-33
SLIDE 33

Roses in the Desert – Fertilizer Facts

Fertilizer Facts

  • N-P-K - Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium (20-10-10 vs 10-20-20)
  • The higher the number, the more concentrated the nutrient is in the fertilizer
  • Numbers listed as 20-5-5 contains four times more nitrogen than phosphorus and potassium
  • Our soil is high Ph, so it’s low in Iron & Magnesium (Mg)
  • Iron must be purchased separately
  • Mg is in Epson Salts
  • Use Iron & Mg (2-3X/year)

Nitrogen (N) – Nitrogen = growth of leaves on the plant Phosphorus (P) – Phosphorus = root growth and flower and fruit development Potassium (K) – Potassium helps the overall functions of the plant perform correctly Iron (Fe) – Without it plants can’t produce chlorophyll, can’t get oxygen and won’t be green Magnesium (Mg) – part of the chlorophyll and essential for photosynthesis How to tell Iron from Mg Deficiency ??? 33

Roses in the Desert – Iron Pellet Application

Trees Use 4 pellets per inch of trunk diameter. Punch or auger the required number of holes 4 inches deep, spaced evenly around the dripline. Place pellets in the bottom of each hole. Close holes. If chlorosis is severe, increase to 6 pellets per inch of trunk diameter. Shrubs For shrubs, use 4 pellets per 3 feet of height. For azaleas and other flowers that are from 1 to 3 feet in height, use two to four pellets. 37
