  • 5 Basics that must be in every set of reasons
  • State the name of the class and how you placed it.
  • Compare the 1st place horse to the 2nd place horse (top pair)
  • Compare the 2nd place horse to the 3rd place horse (middle pair)
  • Compare the 3rd place horse to the 4th place horse (bottom pair)
  • Repeat your placing for the class and thank your judge
  • Additional elements for more advanced reasons givers
  • Grants & faults
  • Grant – a positive quality of the bottom horse in a pair
  • Fault – a criticism (negative) quality of the bottom horse in a pair
  • Big and little opening statements
  • Transition statements connect pairs of horses and is located between each of the

three pairs.

  • Opening and closing statements are at the beginning and end of the reasons and

state the placing of the class.

  • Each judging contest will have halter and multiple performance classes to judge.

You must know what the standards are for each class in order to judge against the ideal for that class.

  • Use equine terms – correct breed, discipline, and gender terms
  • Use “er” or “more or less” terms for comparing horses in pairs
  • Don’t use slang terms!
  • Judge from the positive!!!
  • Examples of ways to use “more or less” is

descriptions:

  • 1 had more muscling than 2
  • 3 was more balanced and divided more

evenly into thirds when viewed from the profile.

  • Examples of ways to use “er” words:
  • 1 has a longer back than 2
  • 4 is straighter through the

cannon bone than 3

  • 2 has a cleaner throatlatch than 3
  • Find a note taking system that

works for you!
