Our World

  • 150 million people infected by insect-borne diseases each year
  • Annual deaths from Malaria is 2 to 3 million people
  • Deaths are mainly in sub-Saharan Africa & South America
  • Children under 5 years are the main victims
  • Prevention

– Medication – Indoor residual spray – Impregnated Bed Nets – Education

  • SustainLife (Insect-X-Term) is part of the solution

  • The insecticide attacks the nervous system
  • Causing
  • Disorientation
  • Rapid knock-down
  • Paralysis
  • Death
  • The synergist prevents resistance to the insecticide

The Mosquito Kill Mechanism

slide-6
SLIDE 6

The role of the Synergist

  • PBO is a synergist developed in the 1950’s and is present in all our paint

formulations

  • It counteracts the malaria carrying mosquito’s ability to build up a resistance to

Pyrethroids

  • Mosquitoes can build up a resistance to Pyrethroids by generating an enzyme which

enables a detoxification of the insecticide. PBO prevents the formation of this enzyme

  • In addition PBO enhances the kill rate
slide-7
SLIDE 7

Product Safety

  • Active ingredients certified & in use globally
  • Concentration levels are very low
  • Mammalian toxicity is very low

Understanding the product

  • Eco friendly water-based paint
  • Certified to Class 1, Sections 5.4 & 5.5 of the European Standard EN13,300
  • 15 to 20 ingredients in the paint. Focus on 3
  • Binder: An acrylic resin. GP use only the highest quality

resins and optimise the quantity to maximise durability

  • Pigments: Very fine powders (mainly inert)
  • Insecticides: Pyrethroids
slide-10
SLIDE 10

Understanding the product

Binders & Pigments

  • Appropriate selection of resin & pigment type, quality & quantity along with the

correct technology ensures the long term durability of the paint

  • The paint is formulated to ensure the resin locks in the pigment and all other

ingredients

  • The “locking in effect” depends not only on the resin but also on the choice & ratio of

the other ingredients

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Understanding the product

Insecticides

  • Were selected based on track record of insect extermination (mosquitoes in particular) and

compatibility of its active components with the resin and other paint ingredients

  • The paint has been formulated to ensure a slow release of the insecticides active ingredients
  • Efficacy maintained for 3 years due to slow release

Test results

Bioassays were carried out at 25 ± 2 oC & 75 ± 10% Relative Humidity 1. According to WHOPES protocols 2. 10 female mosquitoes per replicate test released onto test surface 3. Mosquitoes held inside plugged cone on treated surface for 30 minutes 4. After 30 minutes suction aspirator used to transfer mosquitoes to paper cup 5. Cotton soaked in 10% glucose present in paper cup 6. Cups placed in humidity chamber and held for 24 hours 7. Time percentage mortality recorded

Hygen paints are tested according to the Japanese standard JIS Z 2801:2000 “Antimicrobial products – Test for antimicrobial activity & efficacy” The test involves exposing 5 cm2 painted panels to bacterial suspensions (MRSA & E.Coli) for 24 hours and monitoring the bacterial inhibition by determining total colony counts and log reduction
