  2. Our World • 150 million people infected by insect-borne diseases each year • Annual deaths from Malaria is 2 to 3 million people Deaths are mainly in sub-Saharan Africa & South America • Children under 5 years are the main victims • • Prevention – Medication – Indoor residual spray – Impregnated Bed Nets – Education SustainLife (Insect-X-Term) is part of the solution •

  3. SustainLife Coatings

  4. SustainLife Coatings Insect-X-Term D375 A high performance paint incorporating the Anti Malaria insecticide Insect-X-Term HG A high performance paint incorporating Anti Malaria insecticide & Anti-microbial additive (MRSA & E-Coli)

  5. The Mosquito Kill Mechanism • The insecticide attacks the nervous system • Causing • Disorientation • Rapid knock-down • Paralysis • Death • The synergist prevents resistance to the insecticide

  6. The role of the Synergist PBO is a synergist developed in the 1950’s and is present in all our paint • formulations It counteracts the malaria carrying mosquito’s ability to build up a resistance to • Pyrethroids Mosquitoes can build up a resistance to Pyrethroids by generating an enzyme which • enables a detoxification of the insecticide. PBO prevents the formation of this enzyme • In addition PBO enhances the kill rate

  7. Product Safety • Active ingredients certified & in use globally • Concentration levels are very low • Mammalian toxicity is very low

  8. Insecticides Insect-X-Term D375 Deltamethrin + Synergist Insect-X-Term HG Pyrethroid + Synergist + Anti-microbial additive

  9. Understanding the product • Eco friendly water-based paint Certified to Class 1, Sections 5.4 & 5.5 of the European Standard EN13,300 • 15 to 20 ingredients in the paint. Focus on 3 • Binder: An acrylic resin. GP use only the highest quality • resins and optimise the quantity to maximise durability • Pigments: Very fine powders (mainly inert) Insecticides: Pyrethroids •

  10. Understanding the product Binders & Pigments Appropriate selection of resin & pigment type, quality & quantity along with the • correct technology ensures the long term durability of the paint The paint is formulated to ensure the resin locks in the pigment and all other • ingredients The “locking in effect” depends not only on the resin but also on the choice & ratio of • the other ingredients

  11. Understanding the product Insecticides • Were selected based on track record of insect extermination (mosquitoes in particular) and compatibility of its active components with the resin and other paint ingredients The paint has been formulated to ensure a slow release of the insecticides active ingredients • Efficacy maintained for 3 years due to slow release •

  13. Test results The following tests were carried out on painted tiles in accordance with the WHO bioassay cone method WHO bioassay cone Holding cup / glucose

  14. Test results Humidity Chamber

  15. Test results Bioassays were carried out at 25 ± 2 o C & 75 ± 10% Relative Humidity 1. According to WHOPES protocols 2. 10 female mosquitoes per replicate test released onto test surface 3. Mosquitoes held inside plugged cone on treated surface for 30 minutes 4. After 30 minutes suction aspirator used to transfer mosquitoes to paper cup 5. Cotton soaked in 10% glucose present in paper cup 6. Cups placed in humidity chamber and held for 24 hours 7. Time percentage mortality recorded

  16. Test results Testing was carried out at the London University School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

  21. Product Approvals • Certified to EN 13,300 Section 5.5 (Opacity): Class 1 Certified to EN 13,300 Section 5.4 (Wet Scrub Resistance): Class 1 • Centre for Research in Engineering & Surface Technology (CREST) is the Irish certification • body • Insecticide active ingredients approved by the PRCD in Ireland Insecticide active ingredients approved by the Health & Safety Executive in the UK • Deltamethrin is an insecticide used by the WHO in their bed net programme • Insecticide active ingredients approved in a number of countries globally •

  22. SustainLife -- Insect-X-Term HG This product combines the anti-malarial properties of Insect-X-Term with the anti-microbial properties of Hygen General Paints developed Hygen as a secondary defense against bacteria such as the hospital superbug MRSA & E.Coli

  23. SustainLife -- Insect-X-Term HG Characteristics of Hygen • Thermal stability • UV stability Inhibits bacterial growth & subsequent colonization • Active ingredient is silver •

  24. SustainLife -- Insect-X-Term HG -- test results Testing was carried out by the Centre for Research Engineering Surface Technology (CREST) and Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT)

  25. SustainLife -- Insect-X-Term HG -- test results Hygen paints are tested according to the Japanese standard JIS Z 2801:2000 “Antimicrobial products – Test for antimicrobial activity & efficacy” The test involves exposing 5 cm 2 painted panels to bacterial suspensions (MRSA & E.Coli) for 24 hours and monitoring the bacterial inhibition by determining total colony counts and log reduction

  26. SustainLife -- Insect-X-Term HG Anti-bacterial testing to JIS Z2801 Against Beaumont Hospital MRSA Clinical strain MRSA Resistance JIS Z2801 > 3 log reduction implies 99.9% kill 6 5 Log Reduction 4 3 2 1 0 Before scrub test After scrub test Log 10 reduction >3: bactericidal, high bacterial kill, little or no growth observed Log 10 reduction <3: bacteriostatic, low or moderate bacterial inhibition, growth observed Bactericidal agents kill bacteria; bacteriostatic agents only slow growth or reproduction
