Sustainability Defined

There are many “definitions” for sustainability, the easiest way to think about it is: Sustainability is the capacity to endure. The Brundtland Commission says: "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Simpler yet: Sustainability is the ability to continue a defined behavior indefinitely. All these mean the same thing - who is your audience???

Infuse Sustainable Thinking Into Management Processes

Cost Performance Schedule

Cost Risk:

  • Material scarcity
  • Rare earths
  • Market pressures
  • Energy costs

Schedule Risks:

  • Material qualification
  • Environmental compliance

requirements

  • Waiver processing

Performance Risk:

  • Lack of material pedigree
  • Operational uncertainty
  • System failures

Mitigation of Cost, Schedule and Performance Risks Through Implementation of Sustainable Principles Considering System Life Cycle Cost

Sustainability

  • Sustainability has different meanings and drivers

dependent on the audience

  • Mission – Environment – Community – Business…..
  • You must target to your audience - their value proposition

and their areas of interest and concern

  • The project manager with a limited budget may not care

about the socio/community impact

  • The CFO is looking at the budget in 1/2-5 years

increments

  • The facility manager is about todays’ emergency and

tomorrows needs

  • So sustainable practices need to be incorporated into

existing processes so that it becomes a given not a burden.

  • Push the envelope of business as usual thru the

sustainability lens.

  • Design and Plan to requirements, outcomes and goals -

drive innovation and use of sustainable resources.

– Design to Outcomes and Goals not metrics. – Use the opportunity side of risk for the design process using Sustainable Engineering, Chemistry, Energy Management…

Challenge – Changing Perception

  • Sustainability is about effective program and project

management and operations - not compliance - although compliance is usually achieved.

  • Understanding the program/project goals, the

desired sustainable outcome forces innovation.

  • Remember your organization has to find value in the

proposition.

  • Has to be a win-win-win.
