  6. Lapillo The internal part of the rock is in fact composed of an enormous quantity of ducts having a very small/medium diameter, intercommunicating between themselves and also externally. Pumice www.europomice.com alveolar texture of remarkable lightness, high porosity, it provides great water retention , slow release of liquids and great thermal insulation.

  7. Zeolite Chabazite type . This is a natural volcanic material with a high and selective cationic exchange capacity. By appllyng the zeolites to substrates results in a marked qualitative and quantitative improvement in production, a reduced use of synthetic fertilizers , irrigation water and pollution of the surface and deep www.europomice.com hydrological system. The structural composition of zeolites is characterized by a framework of linked tetrahedra. the presence of open cavities in the form of channels and cages, which are usually occupied by H 2 O molecules that are commonly exchangeable. www.researchgate.net (Moshoeshoe, Tabbiruka, Obuseng, 2017)

GREEN ROOF MEDIA Comparative trial of #7 different media EXTENSIVE - mix of Sedum: 1 0% Sedum acre, 15% Sedum reflexum oxbow, 15% Sedum reflexum angelina, 20% Sedum atropurpureum, 15% Sedum album, 15% Sedum rubrotinctum, 10% Sedum floriferum. www.europomice.com INTENSIVE - mix of grasses: 25% Lolium MEASURES : 1. Volumetric Water Content (VWC); perenne, 25% Festuca 2. area covered by the vegetation (LGC) over time, ovina, 25% Poa pratensis e measured by Digital Image Analysis (DIA). 25% Festuca arundinacea. 11. Water Holding capacity (ml/l) www.europomice.com Vulcaflor light (Europomice) shows the highest water holding capacity. Trials by Landlab, Italy landlab.net

  12. EXTENSIVE Lecagarden Vulcaflor Light (Europomice) - Vegetation coverage 34 days after planting (DAP) - measured by image digital analysis www.europomice.com The plants (Sedum) initial growth in Vulcaflor light (Europomice) was the fastest : after 2 weeks (DAP 15) the vegetation coverage was twice the size of the other media. After a month (DAP 34) Vulcaflor light still showed the largest vegetation coverage : +50% compared with Agricola 2000 B e + 80% compared with Lecagarden extensive. Trials by Landlab, Italy landlab.net

  13. INTENSIVE Europomice www.europomice.com Vulcaflor intensive showed the highest vegetation coverage compared with the other media on trial (+ 45 % vs Agr. 2000 and + 145 % vs Lecag) . After 40 days Vulcaflor intensive maintains the highest vegetation coverage (+ 40%) . Trials by Landlab, Italy landlab.net

  14. In 2015 the EU financed a study for developing Media for Green roofs in Malta. All the 6 soil media that passed the preparatory trials include volcanic rocks such as pumice and lapillo. Europomice volcanic rocks have been extensively tested by www.europomice.com Universities and research centers: University of Milano, University of Padova, University Federico II Napoli, University of Modena e Reggio, University of Di Malta Landlab, MAC Minoprio

  15. COLLABORATIONS Europomice has teamed up with numerous companies, Italian and international. Europomice provides soil media tailored to the client’s specifications What you see depends on how you view the world. To most people, this is just dirt. To a farmer, it’s potential. Monarch butterflies are an endangered species, the population in recent years has been reduced by up to 30 percent due to the destruction of their natural environments, the excess of chemicals, pollution and the simplification of the territory.

  27. Bee Work in progress…2019 October….and the third… Biodiversity As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem . They support the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants, which serve as food and shelter for creatures large and small. Bees contribute to complex, interconnected ecosystems that allow a diverse number of different species to co-exist.

  32. From biodiversity to biophilia Through millions of years of human history, our ancestors lived in close connection to nature and the world of forests, fields, and trees. Biophilia is defined as "the innately emotional affiliation of human beings to other living organisms ." This theory predicts that human beings should be happier, healthier, and more at peace when they live in the presence of nature. Scientific studies have borne this theory out in practice, showing that exposure to nature reduces stress , speeds up recovery for hospital patients, lowers blood pressure, reduces depression, and increases insulin sensitivity among diabetics. In one recent study, for example, for every 10 trees planted per block, residents felt 1 percent healthier, the equivalent of giving "each household in that neighborhood $10,000," according to the University of Chicago. City Forest Solutions brings trees, gardens, and meadows into the city by transforming vertical and horizontal spaces into living expressions of the natural world.

  33. KEY POINTS ✓ Plants “like” volcanic soils ➡ They are fertile because of their physical structure and chemical properties (BTW microbes also like them) ➡ Volcanic rocks are clean: free of toxic elements, residuals or weeds ➡ Europomice pumice, lapillo and zeolite, due to their open cell porosity and high cation exchange capacity, perform very well in terms of water holding capacity and habitability for plants and bosting biodiversity www.europomice.com ✓ The use of volcanic materials in engineered soils, with enhanced properties, is well established in Europe ✓ Europomice can provide soils, or single components, matching the client specifications and standards (ASTM, FLL) for GREEN Infrastructures, including green ROOFS
