  33. Mark Oldershaw, Olympian “ Looking back at my youth, I realize that the greatest & most influential thing that my mom ever said to me were three little words: "Go play outside." Living in Burlington, that meant endless days biking around the neighbourhood with friends, exploring more and more of the city as I got older. It meant building sand castles, playing games & swimming at Burlington Beach. It meant exploring the countless parks, forests & streams throughout our city. It meant playing lacrosse, football, soccer, baseball, street hockey & running cross country, both at school & just for fun.As a kid, I took those things for granted, but as I've grown older, I've realized just how lucky I am to call Burlington home. As an Olympic athlete I have travelled the globe, paddling my canoe in countries too numerous to count. While I enjoy my travels, I always come home knowing that we live in one of the greatest places in the world. It's no surprise that Burlington is often found at or near the top of various "best places to live" lists. Our family friendly communities are ideal for people of all ages and our city has so much for everyone to explore. The beautiful Lake Ontario is literally in our backyard, a true playground for adventurous spirits. For those who want to stay on land, hike the escarpment trails of Mount Nemo, head to the Royal Botanical Gardens, or check out our amazing festivals like the Sound of Music, or my personal favourite: Ribfest! Whatever you enjoy, Burlington has something for you to enjoy, & if I can pass on one piece of advice, it would be simple: Go play outside. ” Mark Oldershaw , Olympian

  34. Walk off the Earth “When we are on the road and someone asks where Walk Off The Earth is from, like most Burlingtonians, I'm tempted to say Toronto. But I don't. I'm too proud of where I'm from and always answer 'Burlington' instead. But it’s not as though I am hanging on a distinction without a difference. I remember noticing back in high school, playing in bands, that Burlington was at the center its own music scene--we had our own musicians, our own venues, our own haunts, and most coolly, our own sound. Bands like The Spoons and Finger Eleven were at the leading edge of this, and perhaps WOTE holds that candle now--I am not the one to say. This town is packed with great musicians and artists of all stripes, both aspiring and accomplished. And then there is Sound of Music Festival – what a phenomenal, completely made-in-Burlington, world-class event. So while there is a lot to like about Burlington--just look around--what I love about Burlington is this slightly submerged, but always burbling creative vitality that I am alluding to. It's this verve, this mojo, that besides making Burlington a great place to enjoy the arts, I think, earns Burlington its own star on the musical map. ” Mike Taylor (Beard Guy), Walk Off The Earth

  35. How 2 Connect, Celebrate, Honour, Build Connect with Past Honour Excellence  Remember when…TBT  Host new events (invite Famous Burlingtonians)  Tie into an anniversary - BGC  Check the Tourism Famous Celebrate being Canadian Burlingtonian list and  Add theme to existing events submit suggestions & activities Build Legacy 4 Tomorrow  Create displays, special  Create a 150 project – menus, fly flags, plant tulips large or small
