NGSS – Physical, Life, Life/Environmental, and Earth Science 7th-Grade: The Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs) include: structure and properties of matter, and chemical reactions. 8th-Grade: The Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs) include: definitions of energy, conservation of energy and energy transfer, the relationship between energy and forces, energy in chemical process and everyday life and forces and motion, and types of interactions.

Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram. versus

Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA)

WHAT IS IT?

  • Science assessments given to 8th

graders in the spring.

  • Assessments that provide parents,

educators, and others with data on student progress towards science literacy.

  • Assessments that test students on

concepts covered in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

  • MISA consists of four ‘units’.
  • Units 1 - 3 contain 3 tasks per unit,

which are based on scientific phenomena; six questions per unit -- 1 constructed response and 5 other types

  • f questions.
  • Unit 4 contains 1 task similar to units 1
  • 3 and one extended construction

problem, which may contain a simulation.
