  1. Dr Nicholas Leadbeater

  2. NEW SYNTHETIC METHODS GROUP broadening the scope of preparative chemistry and enhancing undergraduate education d h i d d t d ti → developing new, cleaner, greener ways to make chemicals developing new cleaner greener ways to make chemicals → implementation of new technology to facilitate chemistry → furthering understanding of how chemical reactions work → develop new lecture ‐ and lab ‐ based materials for undergraduate chemistry

  3. RESEARCH TEACHING / OUREACH efficient chemistry efficient chemistry green chemistry in courses green chemistry in courses benign reaction media new technology in labs biorenewable feedstocksinternships waste reduction public engagement in science

  4. CHEMICAL INNOVATIONS INSTITUTE established by the CT Legislature in 2010 → initially established at the UCONN Health Center initially established at the UCONN Health Center → to date, no State funding has been given to the Institute → NOT intended to serve in a regulatory capacity or to guide state / federal policy

  5. CHEMICAL INNOVATIONS INSTITUTE established to serve as a resource of i f information, research, and technical assistance ti h d t h i l i t → research and identify chemicals that are important to the state economy research and identify chemicals that are important to the state economy → provide technical assistance concerning chemicals that are of concern to the environment and public health, as well as alternatives to those chemicals → coordinate and share information with institutes in other states → offer trainings for businesses

  6. ACHIEVEMENTS TO DATE INCLUDE: developing outreach strategies to define CT business needs developing outreach strategies to define CT business needs that might be met by the Institute building a network of green chemistry practitioners in the building a network of green chemistry practitioners in the State

  7. EVENTS AND OUTREACH: April 2013: panel discussion on green chemistry as a driver April 2013: panel discussion on green chemistry as a driver for economic development and a safer workplace (partnership with UCONN Innovation Connection and Murtha Cullina LLP) (p p ) December 2012: green chemistry and toxicology discussion (partnership with UCONN Innovation Connection and United Technologies) (partnership with UCONN Innovation Connection and United Technologies) April 2012: green chemistry and engineering workshop (partnership with UCONN Innovation Connection and United Technologies)

  8. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE: link potential “high concern” chemicals with existing cleaner link potential high concern chemicals with existing cleaner, greener alternatives that might apply to CT industry expand outreach to CT companies expand outreach to CT companies assess current research capacity and programs within the State on the topic of identifying and replacing chemicals and State on the topic of identifying and replacing chemicals and determine how well aligned these are with business needs and priorities and priorities

  9. SUMMARY CT is well positioned to use green chemistry i innovation in a proactive way that will build a ti i ti th t ill b ild healthy economy as well as protect people and the environment
