  15. HSD Comprehensive Plan (2015 – 2018)  G1.S4 – Ensure the provision of rigorous, comprehensive STEM education across the K-12 system.  Why this goal?  To provide opportunities for students to build STEM skills  Ensure “future ready” graduates

  16. Background Building  5/28/15 - 3 Supervisors, Director of Technology & Director of Curriculum attended a collaborative discussion with the Lancaster County STEM Alliance and IU 13  3/31/16 – 2 Supervisors & Director of Curriculum attended a Discovery Education workshop on STEM Learning  5/18&19/16 - Director of Curriculum attended a U.S. News & World Report STEM Summit

  17. Key Takeaways  STEM is not…  so much about content (student learning goals are derived directly from our PA standards)  a particular place or thing (e.g. course, room, laboratory)  STEM is..  about the context of how we engage students in learning experiences  about a culture of learning & student driven inquiry  about rigor , relevance and relationships in teaching and learning - 3 R’s  interconnected with the 4 C’s : creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication = STEM Skills  about career awareness in a global society

  20. HSD Operational Definition for STEM Education (Draft)  STEM education is an intentional, transdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning, in which students uncover and acquire cohesive knowledge, skills, and attitudes of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics that they transfer and apply to both academic and real-world contexts.

  21. HSD: Where are we now? (Systemic Enhancements)  Elementary School Level  Designed & implemented 2 new units of study  G5 Topic: Electricity & Magnetism  G6 Topic: Forces, Motion & Simple Machines  Students engage in design challenges  High School Level  Implemented the 1 st Annual G9 STEM Summit in partnership with Jr. Achievement  November 8 & 9, 2016
