Preparation Equity Clarity Competition The standards are college and career ready. They will help prepare students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in education and training after high school. Collaboration The standards are internationally benchmarked. Common standards will help ensure our students are globally competitive. Expectations are consistent for all — and not dependent on a student’s zip code. The standards are focused, coherent, and clear. Clearer standards help students (and parents and teachers) understand what is expected of them. The standards create a foundation to work collaboratively across states and districts, pooling resources and expertise, to create curricular tools, professional development, common assessments and other materials.

Key Instructional Shifts in the CCSS
ANCHORED IN COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS
6
Previous Sets of Standards Common Core State Standards Repetitive: little or no progression from grade to grade; Incoherent: “checklist” mentality; Unfocused: breadth over depth Focus, coherence and clarity: emphasis on key topics at each grade level and coherent progression across grades Unbalanced: either procedure or concepts, but rarely both together Procedural fluency and understanding of concepts and skills Disconnected: Processes, applications and content are separate Promote rigor through mathematical proficiencies (Math Practices) that foster reasoning and understanding across discipline

7
Previous Sets of Standards Common Core State Standards Almost exclusive emphasis on literature Balance of literature and informational texts; focus on text complexity Almost exclusive emphasis on narrative writing Emphasis on argument, informative/explanatory writing, and research Literacy belongs to the English teacher only Literacy is a shared responsibility across the school for history, science, and technical subjects

Standards Comparisons
NJ Standards (2004) CCSS ELA/Literacy Grade 7: Produce written work and
- ral work that demonstrate
comprehension of informational materials. Mathematics Grade 8: Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem. ELA/Literacy Grade 7: Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary
- f the text.
Mathematics Grade 8: Explain a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse; Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions; Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between two points in a coordinate system.

Advances in the CCSS
CCSS Clear Progressions ELA Grade 3: Compare and contrast the most important points and key details presented in two texts on the same topic Grade 4: Integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgably Grade 5: Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgably. Mathematics Domains of ideas that develop logically across grades and end when appropriate: Number and Base Ten Operations -> Number and Fractions -> Rational Numbers

Key PARCC Facts
- One of two multi-state consortia
- PARCC Governing Board composed of Chiefs and Higher
Education leaders from each governing state
- Technology-delivered assessment:
- Faster results
- More innovative items
- Two assessment components:
- Machine-scored, end-of-year assessment
- Separate performance-based component
- 2013-14 – Field test
- 2014-15 – First full administration

1. Determine whether students are college- and career-ready
- r on track
2. Assess the full range of the Common Core Standards, including standards that are difficult to measure 3. Measure the full range of student performance, including the performance high and low performing students 4. Provide data during the academic year to inform instruction, interventions and professional development 5. Provide data for accountability, including measures of growth 6. Incorporate innovative approaches throughout the system

Priority Purposes of PARCC Assessments
Students solve problems involving the major content* for their grade level with connections to practices Students solve problems involving the additional and supporting content* for their grade level with connections to practices Students express mathematical reasoning by constructing mathematical arguments and critiques Students solve real world problems engaging particularly in the modeling practice Student demonstrate fluency in areas set forth in the Standards for Content in grades 3-6

English/Literacy Assessment
BEFORE the CCSS To save money, your principal is thinking about canceling all field trips for the remainder of the year. Write an essay persuading him or her to allow students to continue attending field trips. Use specific reasons and examples to support your response.

Key Implementation Issues
- Role of assessment in school and district accountability and
educator evaluation
- Importance of high quality professional development and
aligned curriculum and instructional materials
- Anticipate a drop in assessment results
