  • St. Rose of Lima Parish Purpose/Mission

Our sacred purpose at St. Rose of Lima Parish is to love and know Christ, to practice His teachings as revealed to His bride the Church in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. As Christ loves His bride, we will love one another in word and deed, perform works of mercy and live out compassionate forgiveness. We will welcome all to the house of our Father, and as a community of faith we will joyfully assist one another in attaining the promises of eternal life through our sharing as members of the One Body and the Sacramental Life.

Reflexiones de Scott Hahn Scott Hahn Reflections Please Pray For... Presenting the Present: Scott Hahn Reflects

  • n the Feast of the Presentation:

Today’s feast marks the Presentation of the Lord Jesus in the Temple, forty days after he was born. As the firstborn, he belonged to God. According to the Law, Mary and Joseph were required to take him to the Temple and “redeem” him by paying five shekels. At the same time, the Law required the child’s mother to offer sacrifice in

  • rder to overcome the ritual impurity brought about by

childbirth. So the feast we celebrate shows a curious turn of events. The Redeemer seems to be redeemed. She who is all- pure presents herself to be purified. Such is the humility of

  • ur God. Such is the humility of the Blessed Virgin. They

submit to the law even though they are not bound by it. However, the Gospel story nowhere mentions Jesus’ “redemption,” but seems to describe instead a religious consecration, such as a priest might undergo. Saint Luke tells us that Jesus is “presented” in the Temple, using the same verb that Saint Paul uses to describe the offering of a sacrifice. Another parallel is the Old Testament dedication of Samuel to the Temple as a priest. The drama surrounding Jesus’ conception and birth began in the Temple, when the Archangel visited Mary’s kinsman, Zechariah the priest. And now the story of Jesus’ infancy comes to a fitting conclusion, again in the Temple. All the readings today concern Jerusalem, the Temple, and the sacrificial rites. The first reading comes from the Prophet Malachi, who called the priests to return to faithful service, and foretold a day when a Messiah would arrive with definitive purification of the priesthood. Likewise, the Psalm announces to Jerusalem that Jerusalem is about to receive a great visitor. The Psalmist identifies him as “The LORD of hosts . . . the king of glory.” Christ now arrives as the long-awaited priest and

  • redeemer. He is also the sacrifice. Indeed, as his life will

show, He is the Temple itself.

Archbishop’s Appeal FAQS

How do I benefit from the Appeal Four personal benefits flow from your appeal gift:

  • 1. Your gift helps you make the Church what God intends

it to be. We are Christ’s hands, feet, and heart when we serve others and assist in the Church’s mission of salvation for all.

  • 2. Your gift ensures that Christ’s mission continues for
  • ur children and loved ones.
  • 3. Your gift reaches all areas of the archdiocese,

supporting social services and evangelization ministries from which you and your parish community may benefit (i.e. World Youth day, Assembly, catechist formation, food pantry, etc.)

  • 4. Seminarians are educated to continue shepherding
  • ur parishes and missions, providing the sacraments, and

preaching the Gospel for years to come. One seminarian’s six-year formation costs about $240,000. Want to experience the unconditional love Christ has for you? We often hear about Jesus’ passion and death, but imagine experiencing them for the very first time. In No greater Love: A Biblical Walk Through Christs’ Passion, we are going to walk step-by-step with Jesus on his journey from his agony in the garden to his crucifixion on

  • Calvary. Along the way, we will unpack the biblical

background to these events, the prophecies and most especially, the ways Jesus is inviting us to walk more closely with him today. No Greater Love is a five-part bible study program that begins on Tuesday, March 3. There will be a morning session from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and an evening session from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. You may register online at: https://studyascensionpress.com/studies/ registration/new or you may contact Efrain or Rose Marie Ponce at 210-218-7552 or 210-218-3467 or rose.ponce@att.net. Deadline to register is Feb. 14.

Lenten Bible Study

The word "choice" (as used

  • n the subject of abortion) is

probably the most misleading and deceptive term in the English language. While it might sound good to say that government should allow people to make all their

  • wn choices, that is neither

practical nor desirable. Some choices are crimes. All crimes are choices. Once a woman is pregnant, barring a miscarriage or an induced abortion, she will have a baby. Therefore, her

  • nly "choice" is, "How is the

baby going to come out? "Will he or she come out alive and crying, or dead and in pieces? Truly, her choice is between life and death---a live baby, or a dead one.

A Womans Right To Choose

All-powerful Father, Christ your son became man for us and was presented in the temple. May he free our hearts from sin and bring us into your presence. Amen.

In the Gospel, we hear Simeon say to Mary: “… your own soul shall be pierced with a sword, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be laid bare.” Your generosity enables the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to bring hope to parents whose hearts are burden with worries and concerns. “Of noble birth and great beauty,” so the ancient accounts describe Saint Agatha, martyred during an early persecution for refusing a powerful Roman’s offer

  • f marriage, since she had consecrated her virginity to
  • Christ. An early preacher, Saint Methodius, reflects

instead on her name, noting that, in Greek, Agatha means “good,” goodness being something we can all strive for, nobly born or common, blessed with beauty, or not! So brutal the tortures that violated her youthful innocence, Agatha, like Agnes and several other women martyrs, was honored from time immemorial by having her name inscribed in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I). Long invoked as protector against earthquakes, Mount Etna erupted as she was being tortured, recent attention has focused on the particularly cruel torture decreed for Agatha, the cutting off of her

  • breasts. This has inspired cancer survivors to promote

Saint Agatha as patron and intercessor for women courageously facing breast cancer, for their families and the multitude of supporters who participate in fund- raising marches and races, and, of course, for the dedicated researchers who seek a cure.
