Providing safe spaces

Availability of quality pre-schools that provide an environment where children can be prepared for primary school, is one of the most effective means of breaking the cycle of poverty Classrooms are the key structures needed to support existing pre-schools. In addition, kitchens to prepare healthy, nutritious meals and connected water-borne toilets to improve hygiene and sanitation

Libraries and feeding kitchens are most needed in primary schools

The importance of pre-school

Early childhood development is critical for children’s long- term success First five years crucially important for brain development Children need good health, good nutrition and a safe, supportive environment Access to pre-schools improves mental and physical health, along with school readiness Reduces risky behaviours Most young children in South Africa are negatively impacted by a range of social and economic inequalities
