BID: BIODIVERSITY INFORMATION FOR DEVELOPMENT A multi-year EU-funded programme to increase the availability and use of biodiversity information in research and decision-making in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific (ACP Countries) - €3,900,000 total EU Funding Goal Improved management of natural capital for human well-being, through increased application of biodiversity information to support decision-making . Objectives • Improving the availability of biodiversity data • Capacity enhancement for biodiversity information management • Integration of biodiversity information into policy and decision-making processes This programme is funded by the European Union http://www.gbif.org/bid

  5. FIRST CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR AFRICA Three grant categories 1. National biodiversity data mobilization grants: ≤ €60,000 per national grant; 2 years max. implementation Objectives • Establish or strengthen national biodiversity information facilities • Increase available biodiversity data, within and beyond the grant period • Apply biodiversity data in response to national priorities

  6. FIRST CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR AFRICA Three grant categories 2. Regional biodiversity data mobilization grants: ≤ € 20,000 per partner; 3 partners minimum; ≤ €10,000 for lead / coordinator; 2 years max implementation Objectives • Establish or strengthen international collaborations to mobilize biodiversity data • Increase available biodiversity data, within and beyond the grant period • Apply biodiversity data in response to conservation priorities

Small biodiversity data mobilization grants: ≤ €5,000 per grant, 1 year max. implementation Objectives • Increase available biodiversity data, within and beyond the grant period • Apply biodiversity data in response to conservation priorities

DATA TYPES • Occurrences: Records on presence of a named organism at a specific place and time • Sample-based data: quantitative data gathered using standard protocols to provide abundance/richness and sometimes time series • Checklists: lists of species recorded within a region • Collection descriptions: basic details about Photo: www.naturekenya.org biological collections that have not yet been digitized - metadata only http://www.gbif.org/publishingdata/summary

  9. CAPACITY ENHANCEMENT Grantees will receive support to develop necessary skills and expertise • Remote helpdesk for technical guidance • Capacity enhancement workshops for national and regional grant recipients

APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA  Legal entity located in an (African) ACP country  Non-private sector  Project co-funding and post-  project sustainability plan  Support for staff time, travel, meetings and workshops  More limited support for IT services and equipment  Data licensing: CC-BY or CC0  etc
