If​ ​we​ ​achieve​ ​these​ ​objectives,​ ​then​ ​we​ ​believe​ ​the​ ​longer-term​ ​objectives​ ​will​ ​also​ ​be delivered. The​ ​North​ ​is​ ​the​ ​North​ ​East,​ ​the​ ​North​ ​West​ ​and​ ​Yorkshire​ ​and​ ​Humber. Slide​ ​5​ ​-​ ​Themes The​ ​Great​ ​Exhibition​ ​of​ ​the​ ​North​ ​will​ ​be​ ​a​ ​revelation,​ ​a​ ​once-in-a-lifetime​ ​celebration​ ​of​ ​the incredible​ ​innovations​ ​in​ ​art,​ ​culture​ ​and​ ​design​ ​going​ ​on​ ​right​ ​now​ ​across​ ​the​ ​North,​ ​telling the​ ​story​ ​of​ ​how​ ​the​ ​North​ ​continues​ ​to​ ​shape​ ​the​ ​way​ ​we​ ​all​ ​live​ ​our​ ​lives. Key​ ​themes​ ​we​ ​are​ ​highlighting​ ​are​ ​the​ ​North’s​ ​innovation​ ​in​ ​Art,​ ​Design​ ​and​ ​Culture. NGI​ ​felt​ ​as​ ​part​ ​of​ ​their​ ​bid​ ​that​ ​it​ ​was​ ​also​ ​important​ ​to​ ​show​ ​the​ ​innovation​ ​through​ ​these themes​ ​that​ ​have​ ​come​ ​out,​ ​but​ ​also​ ​the​ ​innovations​ ​in​ ​the​ ​key​ ​industry​ ​strengths​ ​of​ ​the North.​ ​We​ ​are​ ​therefore​ ​exploring​ ​ways​ ​of​ ​telling​ ​the​ ​story​ ​of​ ​four​ ​outstanding​ ​and​ ​distinctive capabilities​ ​in​ ​the​ ​North,​ ​where​ ​the​ ​North​ ​is​ ​highly​ ​productive​ ​and​ ​competes​ ​on​ ​national​ ​and international​ ​stages:

Slide​ ​7​ ​–​ ​Arrival​ ​Film Depending​ ​upon​ ​their​ ​passion,​ ​visitors​ ​will​ ​be​ ​invited​ ​to​ ​begin​ ​their​ ​journey​ ​in​ ​one​ ​of​ ​three hubs.​ ​ ​Great​ ​North​ ​Museum,​ ​Sage​ ​Gateshead​ ​or​ ​BALTIC​ ​Centre​ ​for​ ​Contemporary​ ​Art.​ ​ ​In each​ ​hub,​ ​visitors​ ​will​ ​experience​ ​an​ ​inspirational​ ​ten-minute​ ​film​ ​telling​ ​the​ ​story​ ​of​ ​the North;​ ​showing​ ​how​ ​innovations​ ​–​ ​in​ ​art,​ ​culture​ ​and​ ​design​ ​–​ ​across​ ​the​ ​North​ ​are​ ​shaping all​ ​our​ ​lives​ ​and​ ​building​ ​the​ ​economy​ ​of​ ​tomorrow.​ ​The​ ​film​ ​will​ ​highlight​ ​Exhibition​ ​content alongside​ ​imagery​ ​from​ ​across​ ​the​ ​North​ ​with​ ​passionate​ ​contributions​ ​from​ ​Northerners​ ​to enthuse​ ​and​ ​orientate​ ​visitors​ ​as​ ​they​ ​start​ ​their​ ​exploration​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Great​ ​Exhibition​ ​across NewcastleGateshead. Slide​ ​8​ ​–​ ​The​ ​Hubs The​ ​Great​ ​North​ ​Museum​ ​will​ ​be​ ​transformed​ ​into​ ​a​ ​fantastical,​ ​immersive​ ​space​ ​with visitors​ ​taken​ ​on​ ​a​ ​journey​ ​that​ ​spotlights​ ​star​ ​items​ ​and​ ​awe-inspiring​ ​stories​ ​of​ ​the​ ​North, celebrating​ ​ground-breaking​ ​achievements​ ​and​ ​innovations​ ​in​ ​art,​ ​culture​ ​and​ ​design. There​ ​will​ ​be​ ​so​ ​much​ ​more​ ​to​ ​say​ ​in​ ​the​ ​first​ ​part​ ​of​ ​next​ ​year,​ ​when​ ​the​ ​full​ ​programme​ ​will be​ ​announced,​ ​but​ ​a​ ​couple​ ​of​ ​pieces​ ​have​ ​been​ ​shared​ ​so​ ​far:​ ​ ​The​ ​space​ ​suit​ ​worn​ ​by astronaut​ ​Helen​ ​Sharman​ ​when​ ​she​ ​visited​ ​the​ ​Mir​ ​Space​ ​Station​ ​will​ ​be​ ​on​ ​display.​ ​Also​ ​on display​ ​will​ ​be​ ​John​ ​Lennon’s​ ​Record​ ​Plant​ ​Piano​ ​that​ ​featured​ ​on​ ​Double​ ​Fantasy,​ ​the​ ​last album​ ​he​ ​released​ ​before​ ​his​ ​death​ ​in​ ​1980. BALTIC​ ​Centre​ ​for​ ​Contemporary​ ​Art​ ​will​ ​present​ ​the​ ​best​ ​in​ ​Northern​ ​contemporary​ ​art including​ ​a​ ​new​ ​solo​ ​show​ ​from​ ​Turner​ ​Prize​ ​nominee​ ​Michael​ ​Dean.​ ​The​ ​Newcastle-born artist​ ​is​ ​renowned​ ​for​ ​creating​ ​sculpture​ ​out​ ​of​ ​words,​ ​using​ ​materials​ ​such​ ​as​ ​concrete, steel,​ ​soil​ ​and​ ​sand.​ ​ ​BALTIC​ ​will​ ​take​ ​their​ ​work​ ​outdoors,​ ​across​ ​the​ ​Quayside. The​ ​Sage​ ​Gateshead​ ​will​ ​be​ ​home​ ​to​ ​great​ ​musicians​ ​of​ ​every​ ​genre​ ​during​ ​Great Exhibition​ ​of​ ​the​ ​North,​ ​celebrating​ ​music​ ​that​ ​has​ ​defined​ ​the​ ​North.​ ​There​ ​will​ ​be​ ​live music,​ ​events,​ ​exhibitions​ ​and​ ​weekend​ ​festivals​ ​for​ ​all​ ​ages.​ ​ ​Sage​ ​Gateshead​ ​is commissioning​ ​an​ ​exciting​ ​major​ ​installation​ ​for​ ​its​ ​foyer​ ​space. Slide​ ​9​ ​–​ ​Hillgate​ ​Quay Ambitious​ ​plans​ ​by​ ​Chelsea​ ​Flower​ ​Show​ ​gold​ ​medalist​ ​and​ ​TV​ ​garden​ ​designer​ ​Diarmuid Gavin​ ​to​ ​set​ ​up​ ​a​ ​“majestic​ ​and​ ​unique”​ ​urban​ ​garden​ ​on​ ​the​ ​banks​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Tyne​ ​have​ ​been unveiled.​ ​The​ ​temporary​ ​installation​ ​for​ ​the​ ​site​ ​between​ ​the​ ​Swing​ ​Bridge​ ​and​ ​HMS​ ​Calliope

  • n​ ​Gateshead​ ​Quays​ ​aims​ ​to​ ​create​ ​a​ ​cultural​ ​oasis​ ​and​ ​be​ ​the​ ​largest​ ​container​ ​garden​ ​in

the​ ​world.

Slide​ ​10​ ​–​ ​Walking​ ​Trails Emerging​ ​from​ ​these​ ​hubs,​ ​visitors​ ​will​ ​further​ ​explore​ ​the​ ​‘Story​ ​of​ ​the​ ​North’​ ​in​ ​up​ ​to​ ​30

  • ther​ ​venues​ ​and​ ​unexpected​ ​places​ ​along​ ​three​ ​walking​ ​routes;​ ​aided​ ​by​ ​entertaining​ ​digital

platforms​ ​that​ ​provides​ ​additional​ ​rich​ ​content​ ​and​ ​supports​ ​wayfinding. Our​ ​call​ ​out​ ​across​ ​the​ ​North​ ​generated​ ​440​ ​submissions​ ​from​ ​right​ ​across​ ​the​ ​North​ ​from visual​ ​artists,​ ​architects,​ ​musicians,​ ​scientists,​ ​engineers,​ ​inventors,​ ​writers,​ ​designers​ ​and digital​ ​makers. We​ ​are​ ​also​ ​in​ ​discussion​ ​with​ ​Northern​ ​partners​ ​regarding​ ​additional​ ​curated​ ​content​ ​and what​ ​appears​ ​on​ ​the​ ​trails​ ​will​ ​be​ ​a​ ​combination​ ​of​ ​this​ ​curated​ ​content​ ​and​ ​a​ ​selection drawn​ ​from​ ​the​ ​creative​ ​call​ ​out.​ ​In​ ​addition​ ​to​ ​indoor​ ​exhibits​ ​and​ ​outdoor​ ​installations,​ ​the trails​ ​will​ ​also​ ​feature​ ​pop​ ​up​ ​events​ ​&​ ​activities. Slide​ ​11​ ​–​ ​Art,​ ​Design​ ​&​ ​Innovation​ ​Trails Art​ ​Trail Visitors​ ​will​ ​explore​ ​the​ ​rich​ ​arts​ ​landscape​ ​of​ ​NewcastleGateshead​ ​from​ ​the​ ​Theatre​ ​Royal and​ ​Northern​ ​Stage​ ​to​ ​the​ ​more​ ​recent,​ ​spectacular​ ​arrivals​ ​of​ ​BALTIC​ ​and​ ​Sage Gateshead;​ ​they​ ​will​ ​also​ ​be​ ​encouraged​ ​to​ ​venture​ ​further​ ​afield​ ​and​ ​visit​ ​the​ ​Angel​ ​of​ ​the North​ ​-​ ​20​ ​years​ ​old​ ​in​ ​2018. Design​ ​Trail Visitors​ ​will​ ​be​ ​inspired​ ​by​ ​stories​ ​of​ ​world-beating​ ​Northern​ ​designers​ ​as​ ​they​ ​explore​ ​the design​ ​campus​ ​at​ ​Northumbria​ ​University​ ​(whose​ ​famous​ ​alumni​ ​include​ ​Sir​ ​Jonathan​ ​Ive)​ ​or enter​ ​the​ ​exciting​ ​world​ ​of​ ​children’s​ ​literature​ ​at​ ​Seven​ ​Stories,​ ​the​ ​National​ ​Centre​ ​for Children’s​ ​Books. Other​ ​venues​ ​along​ ​the​ ​route​ ​include​ ​The​ ​Biscuit​ ​Factory​ ​–​ ​Britain’s​ ​biggest​ ​commercial gallery​ ​–​ ​housed​ ​in​ ​a​ ​former​ ​Victorian​ ​warehouse,​ ​and​ ​the​ ​Northern​ ​Design​ ​Centre,​ ​home​ ​to a​ ​new​ ​generation​ ​of​ ​entrepreneurs​ ​exporting​ ​design,​ ​digital​ ​and​ ​gaming​ ​content​ ​to​ ​the​ ​world. Innovation​ ​Trail Venues​ ​along​ ​the​ ​route​ ​epitomise​ ​the​ ​innovative​ ​spirit​ ​of​ ​the​ ​North;​ ​from​ ​Newcastle University​ ​to​ ​the​ ​International​ ​Centre​ ​for​ ​Life​ ​(at​ ​the​ ​forefront​ ​of​ ​genetics​ ​research)​ ​and Newcastle​ ​Science​ ​Central​ ​(where​ ​businesses,​ ​scientists​ ​and​ ​citizens​ ​actively​ ​collaborate​ ​to create​ ​solutions​ ​for​ ​Smart​ ​Cities),​ ​from​ ​the​ ​Mining​ ​Institute​ ​(witness​ ​to​ ​many​ ​engineering world​ ​firsts)​ ​to​ ​Stephenson’s​ ​Quarter​ ​(where​ ​the​ ​Rocket​ ​was​ ​designed​ ​and​ ​built). Within​ ​this​ ​compelling​ ​environment,​ ​a​ ​range​ ​of​ ​exhibits​ ​and​ ​experiences​ ​will​ ​engage,​ ​inspire and​ ​entertain​ ​visitors,​ ​revealing​ ​the​ ​stories​ ​behind​ ​many​ ​great​ ​Northern​ ​innovations. The​ ​Rocket​ ​will​ ​be​ ​making​ ​a​ ​triumphant​ ​return​ ​to​ ​Newcastle​ ​at​ ​Discovery.​ ​Visitors​ ​will​ ​be able​ ​to​ ​compare​ ​this​ ​with​ ​the​ ​latest​ ​innovations​ ​in​ ​transport.

Slide​ ​12​ ​–​ ​Opening​ ​Weekend On​ ​this​ ​opening​ ​day,​ ​‘sneak​ ​previews’​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Exhibition​ ​Hubs​ ​and​ ​Trails​ ​remain​ ​open​ ​until dusk​ ​as​ ​audiences​ ​are​ ​drawn​ ​to​ ​the​ ​Quayside​ ​for​ ​an​ ​evening​ ​reveal​ ​of​ ​some​ ​major​ ​signature pieces. Slide​ ​13​ ​–​ ​Closing​ ​Weekend With​ ​the​ ​Great​ ​North​ ​Run​ ​forming​ ​the​ ​centrepiece​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Closing​ ​Weekend​ ​in NewcastleGateshead,​ ​we​ ​are​ ​developing​ ​plans​ ​for​ ​the​ ​dispersal​ ​of​ ​content​ ​throughout​ ​the wider​ ​North. Slide​ ​14​ ​–​ ​Business​ ​Expo Held​ ​over​ ​three​ ​days​ ​in​ ​early​ ​July,​ ​the​ ​Business​ ​Expo​ ​will​ ​deliver​ ​an​ ​inspirational​ ​showcase and​ ​exhibition​ ​of​ ​the​ ​North’s​ ​new​ ​and​ ​emerging​ ​multidisciplinary​ ​industrial​ ​strengths​ ​to​ ​a diverse​ ​range​ ​of​ ​audiences​ ​which​ ​include​ ​local​ ​and​ ​international​ ​SMEs,​ ​large​ ​businesses and​ ​the​ ​wider​ ​public. A​ ​key​ ​feature​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Expo​ ​will​ ​be​ ​a​ ​focus​ ​on​ ​Northern​ ​innovation,​ ​which​ ​will​ ​be​ ​showcased through​ ​exhibits,​ ​interactive​ ​knowledge​ ​sharing,​ ​networking,​ ​presentations​ ​and​ ​workshops​ ​to help​ ​stimulate​ ​learning​ ​and​ ​forge​ ​business​ ​connections. The​ ​proposed​ ​venue​ ​for​ ​the​ ​Business​ ​Expo​ ​is​ ​the​ ​Boiler​ ​Shop,​ ​a​ ​unique​ ​building​ ​that​ ​sits​ ​in the​ ​centre​ ​of​ ​the​ ​emerging​ ​Stephenson​ ​Quarter​ ​of​ ​Newcastle. Slide​ ​15​ ​–​ ​A​ ​Northern​ ​Legacy This​ ​slide​ ​provides​ ​a​ ​summary​ ​of​ ​the​ ​legacy​ ​we​ ​hope​ ​to​ ​achieve​ ​for​ ​the​ ​North​ ​of​ ​England. Slide​ ​16​ ​–Summer​ ​Camp​ ​&​ ​Schools’​ ​Programme

  • The​ ​Smart​ ​Thinkers​ ​Summer​ ​Camp​ ​will​ ​happen​ ​across​ ​a​ ​two-week​ ​period​ ​in

NewcastleGateshead,​ ​and​ ​gives​ ​families​ ​an​ ​opportunity​ ​to​ ​work​ ​together​ ​and​ ​see themselves​ ​in​ ​those​ ​innovative,​ ​creative​ ​roles​ ​they​ ​have​ ​experienced​ ​throughout​ ​the Exhibition.​ ​The​ ​focus​ ​will​ ​be​ ​on​ ​inventing,​ ​playing​ ​and​ ​tinkering​ ​with​ ​ideas​ ​and allowing​ ​them​ ​to​ ​develop​ ​through​ ​their​ ​journey.​ ​The​ ​summer​ ​camp​ ​will​ ​be​ ​hands-on, entertaining​ ​and​ ​informative.

  • Schools​ ​wishing​ ​to​ ​visit​ ​the​ ​Exhibition​ ​will​ ​be​ ​able​ ​to​ ​book​ ​day​ ​trips​ ​for​ ​the​ ​period

between​ ​22​ ​June​ ​–​ ​19​ ​July​ ​and​ ​3​ ​–​ ​9​ ​September.​ ​A​ ​visit​ ​to​ ​the​ ​Exhibition​ ​will​ ​be​ ​built around​ ​themed​ ​trails​ ​suitable​ ​for​ ​a​ ​schools’​ ​audience​ ​and​ ​will​ ​provide​ ​a​ ​detailed itinerary​ ​visit.

  • But​ ​the​ ​offer​ ​for​ ​schools​ ​and​ ​young​ ​people​ ​isn’t​ ​just​ ​within​ ​NewcastleGateshead,​ ​with

both​ ​competitions​ ​and​ ​teaching​ ​resources​ ​available​ ​across​ ​the​ ​North​ ​(and​ ​wider).​ ​In January,​ ​a​ ​primary​ ​competition​ ​will​ ​be​ ​launched​ ​that​ ​provides​ ​young​ ​people​ ​with​ ​the

  • pportunity​ ​to​ ​have​ ​their​ ​designs​ ​realised​ ​as​ ​part​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Exhibition.
  • Online​ ​resources​ ​to​ ​support​ ​teaching​ ​and​ ​encourage​ ​engagement​ ​will​ ​be​ ​launched​ ​in

phases​ ​from​ ​January​ ​to​ ​March​ ​with​ ​key​ ​stages​ ​having​ ​different​ ​options:

  • EYFS​ ​and​ ​KS1-​ ​Medium​ ​term​ ​plans​ ​which​ ​will​ ​be​ ​themed​ ​with​ ​the​ ​Exhibition​ ​and

provide​ ​opportunities​ ​for​ ​schools​ ​to​ ​explore​ ​their​ ​local​ ​area​ ​and​ ​discover​ ​how

  • KS2​ ​and​ ​KS3-​ ​Teaching​ ​resources​ ​packs​ ​will​ ​be​ ​aligned​ ​with​ ​the​ ​themes​ ​of​ ​the

Exhibition​ ​–​ ​Innovate​ ​the​ ​North,​ ​Create​ ​the​ ​North​ ​and​ ​Design​ ​the​ ​North​ ​and​ ​are linked​ ​to​ ​the​ ​curriculum

  • KS4​ ​and​ ​KS5-​ ​Focusing​ ​on​ ​showcasing​ ​the​ ​key​ ​industry​ ​sectors​ ​across​ ​the​ ​North

and​ ​the​ ​people​ ​that​ ​work​ ​in​ ​them,​ ​a​ ​People​ ​of​ ​the​ ​North​ ​map​ ​will​ ​be​ ​created featuring​ ​either​ ​videos​ ​or​ ​case​ ​studies​ ​of​ ​early​ ​career​ ​workers​ ​from​ ​a​ ​variety​ ​of sectors​ ​and​ ​pathways.

  • In​ ​the​ ​run​ ​up​ ​to​ ​the​ ​Exhibition​ ​there​ ​will​ ​be​ ​a​ ​series​ ​of​ ​Employability​ ​Skills​ ​based

activities,​ ​culminating​ ​in​ ​a​ ​live​ ​panel​ ​discussion​ ​from​ ​people​ ​from​ ​different​ ​sectors discussing​ ​why​ ​that​ ​particular​ ​skill​ ​is​ ​important​ ​(teamwork,​ ​communication​ ​etc.) Slide​ ​17​ ​–​ ​Get​ ​Involved-​ ​Schools​ ​and​ ​Young​ ​People This​ ​slide​ ​highlights​ ​the​ ​number​ ​of​ ​ways​ ​you​ ​or​ ​the​ ​schools​ ​you​ ​work​ ​with​ ​can​ ​get​ ​involved- if​ ​anyone​ ​has​ ​any​ ​questions-​ ​please​ ​direct​ ​them​ ​to​ ​me​ ​(​lucy@getnorth2018.com​).
