• All convents, monasteries & religious orders

were suppressed or expelled

• Divorced legalized
• Religious schools outlawed
• Wearing clerical dress was illegal
• Priests & religious had to register with the

State

• Government took control of seminaries

The Angel of Peace

– 3 Children together – 3 Visits from the Angel of Peace – Taught them prayers & asked them to offer sacrifices for conversion of sinners

First Visit of the Angel

Second Visit of the Angel

“Pray! Pray very much! The Hearts of Jesus and Mary have designs of mercy on you. Offer prayers and sacrifices constantly to the Most High.” “Make of everything you can a sacrifice, and offer it to God as an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and in supplication for the conversion of sinners. You will thus draw down peace upon your country. I am its Angel Guardian, the Angel

Third Visit of the Angel

“Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the

Himself is offended. And through the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of You the conversion of poor sinners.”

• Children at the Cova de Iria
• Saw “ a lady, clothed in white, brighter than the

sun, radiating a light more clear and intense than a crystal cup filled with sparkling water, lit by burning sunlight”

• Lady told them not to be afraid and that she was

from heaven

• Lady asked them to come on the 13th for six

consecutive months & pray the rosary everyday for the war to end

May 13, 1917

• Children asked if they would go to heaven
• Children asked about two girls from the village

who had recently died

• Lady asked if they would be willing to bear

sufferings for the conversion of sinners

• Asked them to come to the Cova at same time

• Said she’d return a 7th time

Fallout

• Jacinta told her parents
• Lucia’s parents did not believe
• The parish priest tried to discourage them

& feared satanic influence

• The villagers were not all happy about the

extra attention from pilgrims and the government as word spread

• The government opposed them

• Lady encouraged praying the rosary

every day for peace

• Told them that she would return soon

to Jacinta & Francisco to heaven, but Lucia would remain

• Lucia began bringing prayer requests

for the Lady

July 13, 1917

• Lady told them she would reveal her identity

in October & perform a miracle for all to see

• Children receive the three “secrets” from the

Lady

• Asked them to add prayer to end of each

decade of the Rosary: “O my Jesus, forgive us

• ur sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all

souls to heaven, especially those in most need

• f thy mercy.”

First Secret

• The children were given a vision of hell

– “…a sea of fire. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form, like transparent burning embers, all blackened or burnished bronze, floating about in the conflagration, now raised into the air by the flames that issued from within themselves together with great clouds of smoke, now falling back on every side like sparks in huge fires, without weight or equilibrium, amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair, which horrified us and made us tremble with fear…The demons could be distinguished by their terrifying and repellent likeness to frightful and unknown animals, black and transparent like burning coals.”

Second Secret

• The Lady shared a prophetic message

– “You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war is going to end: but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the pontificate of Pius XI. When you see a night illuminated by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign given you by God that he is about to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, and persecutions of the church.

Second Secret

– “To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace; if not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated. In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she will be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world.”

Third Secret

• Third secret was kept a mystery
• End of the world? Great apostasy?
• Was written down for Pius XII and not

to be revealed until at least 1960

• Was finally made public by John Paul II

in 2000 during the Year of Jubilee

Third Secret

• Vision of an angel with a flaming sword crying out,

“Penance! Penance! Penance!”

– “And we saw…a Bishop dressed in white (we had the impression that it was the Holy Father). Other bishops, priests, men and women religious going up a steep mountain, at the top of which there was a big cross of rough-hewn trunks…before reaching there the Holy Father passed through a big city half in ruin and half trembling with halting step, afflicted with pain and sorrow, he prayed for the souls of the corpses he met on his way; having reached the top of the mountain, on his knees at the foot of the cross he was killed by soldiers who fired bullets and arrows at him, and in the same way there died one after another the other bishops, priests, men and women religious and various lay people of different ranks and positions.”

August 13, 1917

• Lady continued to ask that the rosary be

prayed every day for peace

• Promised that “In October Our Lord will

come, as well as Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Saint Joseph will appear with the Child Jesus to bless the world.”

October 13, 1917

• 70,000 people came to Fatima
• Steady rain the day & night before
• “I am the Lady of the Rosary”
• Children call out, “Look at the sun!”

The Miracle of the Sun
