Start with this book to build your basic presentation skills... By tom eisenmann I teach entrepreneurship at the Harvard Business School, where I badger the students with whom I work to improve their presentation skills. Entrepreneurs are constantly pitching their businesses to potential customers, investors, partners, and employees. A persuasive pitch, delivered well, can have a huge impact. Unfortunately, like many business schools, we do not teach management communications at HBS, and most of my students have picked up bad presentations habits in their past jobs with consulting firms, investment banks, etc. Their slides are cluttered, their presentation decks are poorly structured, and they don't know how to connect with an audience.

  6. I've been looking for a book for my students that covers the basics of structuring a coherent presentation, creating effective slides, and delivering a presentation in a compelling manner. Previously, I had to send students to three separate sources: Barbara Minto's "Pyramid Principle," Garr Reynold's "Presenation Zen," and Scott Berkun's "Confessions of a Public Speaker." These are wonderful books, and anyone who creates and delivers presentations should read them. But Kapterev's "Presentation Secrets" provides a terrific overview of all three topics, and it's the right place to start for anyone who wants build their presentation skills. Kapterev provides conceptual frameworks, helpful examples, and practical advice. His warmth and his empathy for anyone who must stand up and address a crowd come across nicely in the book. 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Super information; presentation could use some clean-up By Rex Castle In a word, "Spectacular." Mr. Kapaterev's last chapter with all the references and links to other works is worth the price of the book and the last chapter is something of a synopsis of all the preceding chapters and that "all" is substantial and significant. There were things in this work that I of course disagreed with. Like Mr. Kapaterev makes the rather amazing assertion on page 11 "Everybody knows how to write." My initial response when I read this was "Wow!" But, then, most everyone can probably put some words on a page, which probably constitutes writing in its strictest sense. He also suggests that as long as we're providing value to our audience we don't need to worry too much about going over time. I think if I were President Obama, or perhaps Martin Luther King, Jr., or maybe Steve Jobs, or maybe Mr. Kapertev I could get away with not living to the promise I make to my audience in terms of their time. But, as hard as I try I don't think anyone will ever accuse me of being any of the latter and if we start late or go over our allotted time we are perhaps not going to receive the kiss of death, but we're going to invite it to the party. Statements like that were a bit distracting. In addition there are a whole ton of the word "it" used without an antecedent, which simply makes me, the reader, work harder than I care to. There are, too, quite a few grammar/English things (like "it" used instead of "in," or "that" used instead of "than," or a reference or two that doesn't reference the right spot) that probably no one else notices, but us old English teacher/editor, those were a bit distracting. And, too, this book is a presentation, a presentation about presentation, so I would expect it to be really, really good in regards to this sort of stuff. John Wiley & Sons could have spent a little more on another edit. Without these bumps, however, this is easily 5 stars; I almost went there anyway, but my red pen just wouldn't let me. A great source for information on presentation and I'd advocate its purchase and study. 15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Thoughtful, detailed and full of wise advice By William Cohen A Russian giving advice on how to give presentations? Yes, that's right. Mr Kapterev produced a YouTube short which went viral and he's been asked by a publisher to go deeper. This is quite similar to Nancy Duarte's Resonate in that it provides advice for the TED era - we don't get the same examples from politicians which have faded from memory - Kapterev refers to examples from Steve Jobs, Eddie Izzard and story gurus like Robert McKee. These are very personal and idiosyncratic musings on what it takes to be a great presenter. I found gems about slides, fonts, audiences and memorising scripts. When I pick it up I feel I'm in the company of an entertaining and humble expert who wants to share his expertise. It's an international book, which draws upon the 'global' business culture. As the founder of the UK Speechwriters' Guild, I recommend it. See all 25 customer reviews...
