Lottery Process

  • Where a program is
  • versubscribed the lottery

process will be employed

  • Registrations are categorized

using 3 priorities:

  • Priority 1 - siblings in walk zone
  • Priority 2 - walk zone, no siblings or
  • utside walk zone with sibling
  • Priority 3 – designated attendance area
  • Notification of acceptance via letter
  • r email by 10 business days after

the lottery (this year is March 1, 2019)

Lottery Process

  • Families who are not accepted

are placed on a call back list

  • We are not able to inform you of

how many families are above or below you on the call back list

  • Families must accept the

placement within ten days of the date of the acceptance letter, or the placement will be offered to the next name on the call back list

Timeline for Registration

  • Opens January 14, 2019
  • Closed noon on Tuesday before

Teachers’ Convention (this year February 12, 2019)

  • Lottery drawn on Wednesday

before Teachers’ Convention (this year February 13, 2019)

  • Results of the lottery draw sent

within 10 business days of the draw (this year is March 1, 2019)

  • Parents must accept/decline within

10 days from the date of the acceptance letter

Characteristics of the TLC Program:

  • character education
  • whole group instruction
  • academic enrichment (vertical and

horizontal as appropriate and possible in the school setting)

  • mandatory Music/Band until end of

grade 9

  • Mandatory French as a Second

Language from grade 1

  • singing of O Canada daily
  • mandatory school uniform
  • TLC Program ends in Grade 9

Differences and similarities with

community school programs:

Differences:

  • gradual release of responsibility model
  • character education program
  • French from Grade 1
  • Music/Band until end of Grade 9
  • in middle school, with mandatory Band and

French, students will not have access to as many

Transportation considerations:

  • K-5 yellow bus transportation provided

following CBE congregated stop guidelines for alternative programs

  • transportation for grades 6-9 may be
  • ffered through congregated yellow

bus stops or Calgary Transit (no rebates are provided)

  • parents pay an annual fee for CBE

yellow bus service or purchase monthly Calgary Transit passes

  • Congregated stops are reviewed

annually and informed by pre- registration for transportation, online through MyCBE

  • Congregated stops may not be within

walking distance and alternate arrangements may be required to access the congregated stop

Thorncliffe Colonel Sanders Connections and Transitions

  • Thorncliffe School accepts 80 Kindergarten students

as per the lottery process

  • 80 Kindergarten Students will transfer to Colonel

Sanders for grade 1

  • Colonel Sanders School is allowed to accept new

students to reach projected numbers

  • Colonel Sanders and Thorncliffe students share bus

routes

  • Kindergarten students share the bus with either

morning or afternoon depending when they attend kindergarten

All complete registrations are accepted between January 14 and February 12 at noon. No late registrations can be accepted after 12:00 pm on February 12, 2019. Please do not call the office to inquire about the status of the lottery prior to receiving the letter. There is no advantage to registering on the first day (January 14).

Thorncliffe Office Hours for Registration 9:45 - 3:30 Mon-Thurs 9:45 – 11:30 Fridays The first day of registration is very busy so if you choose to register on January 14, please expect a long wait. We have one office staff member. Registrations can be taken on January 14 after attendance for the school is complete (approximately 9:45am). The office will close for registrations at 3:30pm Monday – Thursday and at 11:30 on Friday. Colonel Sanders Office Hours for Registration 8:30 – 4:00 Mon-Thurs 8:30 – 1:30 Fridays

Questions? At this time, we ask that families hold questions related to uniforms until after you have received an acceptance letter into the program. Thorncliffe School hosts a kindergarten Orientation in the spring with further information specific to CBE TLC kindergarten students.
