Course outline Year 1 Getting started, acquire knowledge of normal structure & function, test vocation, exposure to all areas of medicine Years 2, 3 & 4 Learning in context, develop competence in clinical, scientific and social settings Year 5 Extended placements in clinical settings, preparation for practice

  12. Years 1 and 2 • Majority of time spent on campus – Learning underpinning basic and behavioural sciences – Developing communication and some other clinical skills • Regular time spent off campus – Healthcare and 3 rd sector placements – Developing skills – Understanding healthcare settings

  13. Years 1 and 2 • A blend of Problem Based Learning, lectures, practicals, early clinical experience, skills sessions and anatomy • Emphasis on learning about normal functions of the human body, behavioural and social science

  14. Case 2: A respiratory emergency Meanwhile Ravi has been put on a trolley and has had his pulse and blood pressure checked by a junior nurse… Suddenly Ravi complains of sudden difficulty in breathing and collapses… he is transferred immediately to the resuscitation room. A team of nurses and doctors start his resuscitation… an initial “airway, breathing, circulation” (ABC) assessment is carried out quickly. It is noted that the airway is clear, there are decreased breath sounds in the left lung, and there is a strong regular Radial pulse. Basic observations are taken and these show that the respiratory rate is 35/min, oxygen saturation 90%, pulse 90 beats per minute and blood pressure 120/75 mmHg.

  18. Year 3 • 6 x 4-week blocks in hospital placements – Medical x 2 – Surgical – Child health – Mental health – Elderly Care – Case Based Learning each week • 1 day/week on campus • 4 week GP placement consolidating clinical skills • 2 student-selected 4-week blocks

  19. Year 4 • 3 x 12-wk blocks – all clinical placements 1. Medicine + Neuroscience/Musculoskeletal Surgery + Women’s health 2. 3. Child + Mental Health + Higher Consultation Skills (GP) Case Illustrated Learning each week • 4-week student selected component Career focus • 2-week reading prior to final knowledge assessment
