  • 20% of students will experience a mental health problem that

meets the criteria for at least one mental illness

  • Only 22-34% of children and youth with a mental illness access

professional mental health supports

  • 8% of students report thinking about suicide, and 4% indicate

that they made a suicide attempt in the 12 months preceding the study

  • In the past year, about 31% of students indicated that they were

experiencing psychological distress and did not know where to turn for help

  • 1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental illness or addiction problem
  • By the time Canadians reach 40 years of age, 1 in 2 have—or have had—a

mental illness

  • 70% of mental health problems have their onset during childhood or

adolescence

  • Young people aged 15 to 24 are more likely to experience mental illness

and/or substance use disorders than any other age group

  • Men have higher rates of addiction than women, while women have

higher rates of mood and anxiety disorders

Purpose:

  • A mapping of the current state across the 8 English Language DSB is required to determine

required levels of support for the Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario Region.

Process

Through data collection and review as well as extensive consultation across all 8 Boards, a summary of themes related to strengths and needs have been identified across the SMHO Pillars. DATA COLLECTION:

  • Review of MH Strat Plan and Action Plan in all 8 Boards
  • Review of SMHO “Taking Flight” Strategic Plan (2017-2020)
  • Review of PPM #149
  • Review of sample MOU’s / PSA’s (DSB and CYMH agencies)
  • Review of referral pathway documents across several Boards

will be developed based on resource mapping findings and NSI alignment.

  • Priority setting for the Regional SMH Action and

Support Plan will occur in collaboration with Northwestern ON DSB.
