Current Science Program

  • LUX - Large Underground Xenon Experiment (Dark Matter Search)
  • Direct search for WIMPs using 350 kg xenon within ultra-pure titanium cryosta
  • Surface Laboratory checkout activities to exercise procedures, test installation

and detector operations just wrapping up for transition to Davis Campus

MJD - MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR (Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay)

  • Investigate neutrinoless double beta decay using 40 kg Ge in two cryostats

(start with natural Ge, add up to 30 kg enriched 76Ge)

  • Electroforming copper for detector shielding on 4850L
  • Will deploy detector in Davis Campus; Experiment is a pathfinder for 1-tonne

scale

  • Biology, Geology, Engineering (BGE) experiments operational at SURF
  • Program of characterization (including physics): Biology sampling, seismic/

frequency, microclimate, physics backgrounds

  • Includes Center for Ultralow Background Experiments in the Dakotas (CUBED

(EPSCoR/SD) experiment planned for installation in the Davis Campus

Extending the life of the lab

We have current proposals in to the NSF & DOE;

  • DIANA (Nuclear astrophysics) would run 2015 through 2022 +.
  • LZ (2nd generation Dark Matter) would run from 2015 through 2022.
  • Low Background Counting Facility would run throughout all experiments.
  • LBNE (Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment) would run from 2016 through 2040
  • Reengaging the NSF for Geology, Biology and other experiments
