Points to consider in preparation for stage 3

  • Share information on the safe preparation of a feed with all mothers even if they

have previously bottle fed (don’t assume anything)

  • Ask what type of formula is being used?
  • Ask how are they sterilising equipment?
  • Share leaflets: Guide to bottle feeding Start4life and Simple formula guide

(UNICEF/First Steps Nutrition)

  • REMEMBER RESPONSIVE BOTTLE FEEDING (formula & EBM)
  • Keep baby close
  • Encourage rooting
  • Allow baby to take teat
  • Pace feed
  • Never force a full feed
  • Limit the number of people offering the feed.
