Basic Guidelines to Course Choice

  • S5 - choose an appropriate number of subjects at Higher,

National 4 or National 5 level

  • S6 – choose a number of subjects (Advanced Higher,

Higher, National 5 or National 4 level) based on a points system

slide-7
SLIDE 7

Coursing in S5

  • S5 students are expected to be ‘fully coursed’
  • Some students may wish to study 5 Highers
  • Other students may prefer a combination of Highers and

National Qualifications

  • This will include 1 period of PSE and 1 period of core
slide-8
SLIDE 8

Coursing in S6

  • The study time which sixth year students are given within

the timetable allows them to take a measure of responsibility for their own work.

  • All S6 students must take a course of study with a

minimum tariff of 12 points. (Broadly speaking this equates to 4 column choices)

slide-9
SLIDE 9

S6 Points system

  • Choose courses from 5 option columns, totalling at least

12 points

  • Advanced Higher

4 points

  • Higher

Short National Courses

  • Short courses are 3 periods per week.
  • These are available at National 3, 4 and 5 level
  • Students can study a National Qualification as a short

course if they have previous experience in S1 – S4

  • Teachers will recommend to students if short courses are

an option for them.

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Long National Courses

  • Long courses are 6 periods per week
  • These are offered as National 3, 4 and 5
  • These are open to all students regardless of their

previous experience in the subject

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Advanced Highers

  • Advanced Higher courses are listed on the course choice

sheet, but are not in a column.

  • There is potential at Dunbar Grammar to offer Advanced

Highers in

  • Art and Design, Biology, Business Education, Chemistry,

Computing, Drama, English, French, Geography, German, Graphic Communication, Health and Food Technology, History, Maths, Modern Studies, Music, RMPS, Physics and PE.

Likely Levels of Study

  • Likely levels of study reflect a teacher’s professional

estimate as to the level a student might study the next year

  • This will enable the student to make an informed choice

about subjects

S6 Personal Development

  • Some of the opportunities available to students in S6 will relate

directly to their future career aspirations. For example assisting a class teacher within Dunbar Grammar School.

  • Other opportunities may not be directly linked to a future career, but

instead will provide a rich, contextualised environment in which students can develop a number of leadership and teamwork skills.

  • These experiences could form part of students’ CV, personal

statement or future reference.

  • Some wider achievement experiences on offer may result in a

formally recognised qualification, such as an SQA leadership award, whilst others won’t be formally recognised but will be invaluable in adding to students’ life experiences, level responsibility and employability prospects.
