SPRAYER CLEANOUT

Has always been

important but even more so now.

“Hot” burndown trts.

because of Rs weeds.

Wide variety of crops

and pesticides on a single farm.

GMO & Conv. side by

side or on same farm.

Products sometimes

active at very low rates.

THERE ARE MANY PLACES RESIDUES CAN

REMAIN IN A SPRAYER

TANK-CLEANING AGENTS

Commercial tank cleaners – often label

  • recommended. Good for water and oil soluble

products.

Ammonia – effective at penetrating and

loosening deposits/residues. Does not deactivate pesticides but can increase solubility.

Chlorine bleach – Sometimes recommended for

tank cleanout. Can deactivate residues. Corrosive and hazardous when mixed with ammonia (includes some fertilizers).

ALWAYS READ THE LABEL

SURFACTANTS CAN ACT AS

UNINTENTIONAL CLEANERS:

Certain surfactants can be very effective at

removing residues from tanks, hoses, and strainers.

Growers in Arkansas have had problems when

switching from growth regulator herbicides (2,4- D, triclopyr, dicamba) to post emerge applications

  • f other products in soybeans and cotton. The

surfactant used in the post emerge application was probably the reason.

FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS FOR YOUR CROP & CHEMICAL COMBINATIONS. TAKE THE TIME TO THOROUGHLY CLEAN YOUR EQUIPMENT WHEN THE POTENTIAL FOR PROBLEMS IS HIGH. DON’T FIND OUT TOO LATE THAT THE SPRAYER SHOULD HAVE BEEN CLEANED BETTER.

RE: THE VIDEO

The video was filmed in early July 2013 near

Piggott, Arkansas, in Clay County in the NE part

  • f the state. Andy Vangilder is the Staff

Chairman for Clay Co.

Andy has been reporting problems with sprayer

cleanout for a couple of years.

The primary crops in that region are GMO and

conventional varieties of cotton, rice, corn, and soybeans.

RE: THE VIDEO

We spoke to several farmers about the problems

they had with sprayer cleanout.

Andy also took me by a cotton field that had been

damaged by herbicide residues from a sprayer that had no been sufficiently cleaned.

RE: THE VIDEO

Other growers had problems with flushing the

booms and had worked on solutions too.

John Deere dealer was reported to be offering

kits (for a price) to remedy boom cleanout problems.

We will conduct 2-3 sprayer cleanout clinics for

farmers and applicators in November 2013. Bob Wolf will be helping with the effort.

RE: THE VIDEO

Sorry about the wind noise in parts of the video. The framing on some of the shots is a bit off too

because I didn’t want to make the farmers nervous by sticking the camera in their face.
