Rhode Island Farm Energy Program

Who we are

The Rhode Island Farm Energy Program (RIFEP) is a project of the Rhode Island Resource Conservation & Development Area Council( RI RC&D).

What we do

Administer the RI Agricultural Energy Program grant

A collaborative project of RI RC&D, RI Department of Environmental Management, Division of Agriculture and Office

  • f Air Resources and RI Office of Energy Resources.

RIFEP provides outreach to Rhode Island Farmers about available funding opportunities and incentives for making Energy Efficiency Improvements and/or installing a Renewable Energy System for farm operations.

What are….Energy Efficiency Improvements?

Energy Efficiency is reducing the amount of energy used to perform the same task through the use of:

  • Measures that are suitable to reduce the specific energy input per unit of

product

  • Methods that reduce energy consumption while still achieving the same

service and production level.

slide-8
SLIDE 8

Energy Efficiency

  • Lighting
  • Heating
  • Cooling
  • Ventilation
  • Fans
  • Automated Controls
  • Insulation

Do you have Energy Hogs in any of these categories on your farm?

slide-9
SLIDE 9

Energy Efficiency - examples

  • Well-maintained farm equipment has greater efficiency than poor

maintained machinery

  • Tire pressure
  • Out-of-tune engines (clogged filters & injectors)
  • Insulate buildings
  • Align and/or replace doors and windows
  • Insulate (or add more)
  • Upgrade to Energy Efficient heating, ventilation and AC equipment

Energy Efficiency - examples

Improve irrigation Pumps – are they old and fatigued? Dairy Plate cooler (pre-coolers) Variable speed vacuum pumps Refrigeration heat recovery

slide-11

Energy Efficiency examples

  • Greenhouses
  • Thermal curtains
  • Root zone heating (under bench)
  • Envelope insulation
  • Natural ventilation
  • Electronic temperature controls
  • Fans
  • Lighting

How Efficient is my Farm Operation?

Getting an Energy Audit

(two programs)

Farm Energy Efficiency Program - The Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources in collaboration with National Grid offers free energy efficiency audits for farms. Incentives and rebates are available for many energy efficient measures. A free, no-obligation energy audit for farmers Agricultural Energy Management Plan (AgEMP) (on-farm energy audit) is a Conservation Activity Plan personalized to ensure coverage of each farm’s main energy uses. An AgEMP is an analysis of a farm’s foundation and management that provides recommendations on how to reduce energy use. USDA-Natural Resource Conservation Service
