Most resolutions fail
Often on day one.
Why we fail
We will fail. We're human. A righteous person falls seven times … — Proverbs 24:16a.
Why we fail
What matters is what happens next. A righteous person falls seven times, but rises again. — Proverbs 24:16. How do we rise again after we fall?
The example of Peter
Peter was always putting his foot in his mouth. He must have known it, and tried to change.
The example of Peter
From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he
Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” — Matthew 16:21-23.
The example of Peter
“Get behind me, Satan!” The most stinging rebuke Jesus delivers to anyone. Must have been the worst moment in Peter's life.

What Peter did next
In the very next chapter, Peter is back — and as one of Jesus's closest and most trusted friends: After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. — Matthew 17:1-3.

What did Peter do after his moment of great failure? What did Peter do after his moment of great failure? He stuck He stuck close to Jesus close to Jesus. .

What Peter did next
Don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you. For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights. — Proverbs 3:11-12, quoted in Hebrews 12:5b-6.

We are not rejected
Despite Jesus's stinging rebuke, Peter was not rejected: You could say Satan in him was rejected.
We are not rejected
Despite Jesus's stinging rebuke, Peter was not rejected: You could say Satan in him was rejected. Neither are we rejected, even at our worst.
We are not rejected
Despite Jesus's stinging rebuke, Peter was not rejected: You could say Satan in him was rejected. Neither are we rejected, even at our worst. There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. — Romans 8:1-2.
We are not rejected
God never gets bored of working with us.
We are not rejected
God never gets bored of working with us. He doesn't say “That's not good enough. Forget it.” He says “That's not good enough. I'll keep working on you.”
God is still at work in us
God never gets bored of working with us. He doesn't say “That's not good enough. Forget it.” He says “That's not good enough. I'll keep working on you.” We all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being changed into his likeness from one degree of glory to another. — 2 Corinthians 3:18 (RSV)
So we keep returning
Fall seven times, get up again. I am not great at keeping my temper. But I am good at apologising.
So we keep returning
Let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. — Galatians 6:9.
