Guiding Principles of Reopening

Safety

Students, faculty, staff, and community safety has, and will, drive all of

  • ur decisions.

Normalcy

Our goal is to provide as much normalcy to students, faculty, and staff as safely as possible.

Adaptability

We will be adaptable, flexible, and ready to make changes to improve the experience of

  • ur students all while prioritizing their health and safety.

Patience

We're learning more each day. As we understand more about the virus and how to manage it, we're committed to learning, problem-solving, and making appropriate decisions.

Where Are We Now? July 31, 2020

Full Details on Three Models & Addition of One

We have full, detailed descriptions of all the major facets of each reopening model, as well as the addition of one new model: Full Model, Hybrid by Grade Model, Hybrid by Name Model, and Virtual Model.

Changes Possible Based on Guidance

With more updates coming from the Governor, the Rhode Island Department of Education, and the Rhode Island Department of Health, changes to our Reopening Bishop Hendricken plan may be made throughout August.

Goal is Full Model Reopening

As of now, our goal and hope is to utilize our Full Model of reopening for the beginning of the 2020-2021 Academic Year at the end of August.

Students will return to campus for in-person learning on select days based on grade level and on an alternating basis. When home, students will learn virtually. Mixed classes are live and synchronous. Students will be divided by last name - Group 1 & 2 - across grade levels for in-person learning on select days and on an alternating

  • basis. When at home, students will learn virtually. All instruction is

live and synchronous.

Full Model

Students are assigned to wings of the building by grade level in an effort to mitigate as much cross-class exposure as possible.

Virtual Model

All students will learn from home with live, structured class meetings according to a modified schedule with enhancements from last spring.

Recognizing that not all families may be comfortable sending their sons to school in an in-person return, whether Full or either Hybrid Model, we have developed an Opt-In option for virtual learning. Students attend classes synchronously live according to the traditional schedule of classes. Opt-In is available across all models of reopening. Families must complete an application for Opt-In to be approved by administration. No reduced tuition rates for Opt-In families. Opt-In students are not eligible for participation in athletics, after school activities, or other in-person or on-campus opportunities.

Stable groups are kept and maintained as much as possible across all models. Masks & face coverings required on campus for everyone, all the time. Physical distancing is required whenever and wherever possible. Desks spaced apart as much as physically possible in classrooms and disinfected between classes. Daily cleaning regiment for all restrooms and high-traffic common areas. New daily arrival and dismissal protocol. Lunch takes place in classrooms. Expanded school nurse's office and contracted part-time CNA. No lockers; personal belongings are kept in backpacks. Various health additions & infrastructure. Symptom screening protocol for students & faculty/staff. Protocol for symptomatic students & faculty/staff. Protocol for positive COVID-19 cases or outbreak. Visitors by appointment only and are screened.

Using the evolving recommendations of state and public health

  • fficials as a guide, Bishop Hendricken is adopting enhanced health

and safety protocols to keep our campus safe.

Schoolwide Health & Safety

Regardless of what form our learning takes, the core of a Bishop Hendricken education will remain the same. Across all models, our full curriculum will be implemented in the classroom and all academic departments will operate fully.

Academics & Curriculum

Full Model - All assessments are given as normal in the classroom. Both Hybrid Models - Assessments only given when students are in the building. Virtual Model - All assessments are given virtually. With limited use of paper and handouts, students should bring their own devices to school for notes and use in the classroom. Devices now allowed in every classroom. Limited number of devices available for students who need one.

Assessments Bring Your Own Device INSPIRE Program Launch Postponed

Postponed from September 2020 to hopeful launch in January 2021.

With so much unknown regarding bus transportation across the state,

  • ur recommendation is to be as proactive as possible. If you are able

to make alternative transportation arrangements for your son, we recommend you consider them.

Most following similar health & safety protocol, per RIDE; each town/district has its own specific guidelines. Mask or face covering worn at all times. 1 student per seat. Maximum capacity of 24-25. Routine cleaning of buses. Resources to register your son through towns that offer free transportation are available in full plan. Ocean State Transit Co. for cities/towns where free service is not available. Health & Safety Mask or face covering worn at all times. 1 student per seat. Maximum capacity of 24. Routine cleaning of buses. Registration is still open, but limited seats remain. Contact Mrs. Heather Picillo at hpicillo@hendricken.com, or 401.889.5426.
