Career Research and College Exploration
- Dozens of counselor-led workshops
- Trimester Schedule – Approximately 60 days long
- Each consists of five 68 minute periods
- Students must register for 4 – 5 courses per trimester
- Students can take up to 2 study halls per year
- Each trimester course is worth .5 credit
- A student can earn as many as 2.5 credits per trimester
- Students can earn up to 7.5 credits per academic year
- Caution: Students earn a FINAL grade at the end of each trimester. Grades are
not averaged for the year like in previous years.
- Students will have the option of College and Career Ready, Honors, and Advanced
Placement courses.
- DAMS teachers will recommend core courses for each student.
- Students will select their elective courses…and a few alternate courses.
- Students will need a total of 6.5 – 7.5 credits for a full schedule.
- Students should see the course selection process as a time for exploration,
growth, and a time to engage and network.
College and Career Ready
These courses are taught using “on grade” regular education curriculum in a setting where students will be expected to master the standards. This class is designed for students who seek to pursue career or college aspirations upon graduation. (These courses are weighted on a 4-point scale.)
Honors Level Courses
These courses are taught on or above grade level and designed for college-bound
- students. These courses are for students that are self-motivated and are responsible
independent thinkers. These students will have excellent grammar, reading, and writing skills and possess a strong academic work ethic. (These courses are weighted on a 5-point scale.)
Advanced Placement Courses
These courses are taught at the college level and are designed for students who want enrichment beyond CCR and Honors Level courses. Students should have excellent grammar, reading, and writing skills, they should be highly motivated, and possess an exceptional academic work ethic. These students should also have a high interest in the areas of study and are motivated to excel in this course. (These courses are weighted on a 5-point scale.)
January 28th – Parent Meeting February 19th – 22nd – DAHS counselors will meet with 8th grade students in classes. February 25th – Elective Day during your Academic Period. March 1st – Course selection sheets are due to your child’s designated team teacher. March 7th/8th –Your child will enter their course requests in our student database with DAMS counselors and staff. March/April – Student requests will be available on the HAC. This is NOT a schedule. August (TBD) – Schedules will be posted on the HAC for review.
