Design Summary
- Current plans call for 2 principle designs to be tested in Proto-DUNE:
- Radiator plate (IU) Design consists of 16 TPB-coated plastic radiator plates (to convert the 128nm
scintillation light to blue light) mounted over a secondary light guide (Y-11-like bar, to convert the blue light to green and transport it to the SiPMs) (40 in ProtoDUNE)
- “Wonderbar” (MIT/FNAL) design calls for a single TPB-dip-coated wavelength shifter/lightguide
bar to shift the scintillation light and transport it to the SiPMs (20 in ProtoDUNE)
- Both designs are supported inside the APA frames in stainless steel rails, and are inserted into
the APA frames after the frames are wire-wrapped. Both PD modules fit within the same APA support structure
- Both designs are read out with 12 sensL 60035 C-series SiPMs. The same readout board is
used for both designs
- SiPMs are grouped into sets of 3, and signals are carried through shielded twisted pair.
- Three cable segments: Short haul (PD to end of APA frame, ~6m), Long haul (APA frame end to
cryostat hatch, ~5m in ProtoDUNE), and external (Cryostat hatch to SSPs, ~15m in ProtoDUNE)
- Custom readout electronics (SSPs) are used to read out SiPM signals. Two configurations are
currently under consideration
- Signals from SiPMs are carried directly to SSPs on twisted-pair cable, 1 SSP channel per 3
SiPMs
- All 12 signals from one PD are ganged with a warm amplifier external to the cryostat, and read
- ut using a single SSP channel.

PD Installation in APAs (ProtoDUNE plan)
- Installation of PDs is planned to happen with the APA frames rotated
vertically
- Installation follows the following rough outline:
- PD is tested in PD scanner (while previous installation is occurring)
- PD “Short haul” cable is pulled through the frame using “Fish tape”
positioned in frame during assembly
- PD to be installed is positioned in “PD lift” and lifted to position.
- PD is slid into APA frame and fastened into position
- Short haul cable is connected & connectivity tested at far end of short
haul cable.
- PD installation lift is lowered to ground position and process repeated
- After 5 PDs are installed in one side of APA, APA is rotated about
vertical axis and process is repeated on other side
- No operational (dark) check of the PDs post-installation is planned
until they are in the cryostat.
17
PD Cabling
- PD cabling will occur concurrently with APA cold electronics
installation.
- Each APA will have 10 Cat-6 PD cables to connect (5 in each of
the APA side tubes)
- Connecting of PD modules to long-haul cables and through the
cryostat feed throughs should occur as early in the process as possible.
- Immediately upon connection continuity checks to the SiPMs
must be made.

PD Installation “Elevator”
- “Elevator” is
fabricated from extruded slotted aluminum bars (“80/20 extrusion”) with a horizontal vertically- adjustable insertion tray.
- Elevator is
supported by a scaffolding separate from the
- ne occupied by
installation personnel to minimize vibration during installation.

Conclusions
- PD module design is well advanced, with ProtoDUNE designs for both
Radiator plate and “Wonderbar” designs currently prototyped
- Plans for incorporating PDs into APA frames are progressnig, and
installation testing into a sample APA frame section underway at CSU
- SiPM mounting PCBs and cabling planning are well-advanced, and
prototypes have been fabricated.
- Two readout electronics schemes are currently being considered, but
PD design is independent of them (except to the extent that SiPM ganging (3, 6, or 12 SiPMs actively ganged at the SiPM mounting PCB? I strongly prefer 3!!)
- The PD group is actively involved in installation planning for Proto-
DUNE
- The schedule (not addressed here) is very challenging, but should be
possible to meet.
