Transfer 2017
Since 2010 the Board of Governors decided to continue to use an assessment model
35% of children transferring from Primary School via the higher ability route ( 70 places)
65% of children transferring from Primary School via the all ability route do not have to have undertaken any form of assessment (130 places)
Provides a balance in terms of range of ability
Lagan College is a GL Assessment Centre (35 Grammar/Integrated Schools across Northern Ireland.)
Importantly Lagan College accepts both AQE and GL Assessment Outcomes

GL Assessment Instrument
GL Assessment is a leading provider of independent tests
and assessments currently used by primary schools and Lagan College;
GL Assessment was formerly NFER; Experts in assessment for over 25 years; We are using a Special Access/Closed test from GL
Assessment in English and Mathematics;
Referenced against the Key Stage 2 Northern Ireland
Curriculum;
2009-2016 Experience and feedback very positive; Application for GL Assessment is free; Requires one morning of assessment; Questions based on good KS2 learning and teaching.

GL Assessment Overview
Will be on Saturday 19th November (Familiarisation Visit
late October)
Test will be held in Lagan College and invigilated in
rooms
One English Assessment One Maths Assessment Multiple choice answers Supplementary paper in December GL Assessment supervises the setting, marking,
standardising of tests and will provide remark service if required;
Results will be issued Saturday 28 January 2017

used in many Primary Schools.

Registration
Forms may be obtained from College website or in
person;
No costs for applicants; Birth Certificate/ Photographic ID; Preference of Assessment Centre; Include any Special Access arrangements or Special
Educational Needs of candidate.

Arrive at school Centre
Children to be seated by 9.30 am;
English Practice and Assessment paper;
Break;
Maths Practice and Assessment paper;
Children collected by 12.45 pm.
Special Assessment Arrangements 1.00pm

Administration on the Day
Parents accompany their child to the Breeny foyer;
Pupils to wear their school uniform;
Invigilators will meet, greet and take pupils to allocated rooms;
Pencils and eraser will be provided by school for each pupil;
Answer sheets are pre-printed with pupils personal details;
Pupils can bring water to drink;
Pupils will be given refreshments at break.

GL Special Circumstances
The deadline for registering GL Special Circumstances is
Friday 16 December 2016 (SCR Form.
Special Circumstances should also be attached to the
ELB Transfer Form with supporting evidence.
Students undertaking the AQE Assessment should refer
to AQE procedures.

Some Considerations
Pupils will be grouped together in rooms with
Primary School peers and are asked to wear school uniform;
Special Assessment Access will be in allocated
rooms;
P7 students displayed exemplary behaviour and a
positive attitude on the day;
Parental choice; All ability route

Transfer Application Form
GL Assessment results will be forwarded to the Primary Principals to assist with the Transfer interviews;
Administered by the Education Authorities;
Usual Transfer Forms to be completed after consultation with Primary School Principal;
Nominate preference of Post-Primary Schools;
Schools select against published Admissions Criteria;
Post Primary School sends letter to parents in late May 2017 stating which school the pupil has been gained admission to.

16th May 2016: Registration opens; 23rd September 2016: Registration closes; Saturday 19th November 2016: Assessments
held in post-primary school centres;
Saturday 10th December 2016
Supplementary Assessments morning;
Saturday 28th January 2017: Results issued.

GL-Assessment will mark the assessments;
The Education Authority will continue to process the Transfer forms;
Open Day will be held on Saturday 14 January 2017;
No impact to our integrated intake – parental choice;
Lagan College provides learning for every child within the family.
Students do not have to undertake any Assessment to gain a place in Lagan College.

Higher/Grammar & All Ability Admissions Criteria
Admissions Criteria for September 2017 published in the Autumn
Admissions Criteria will enable any family to apply regardless of GL or AQE assessment result or none.
Lagan College will accept the outcome of both the AQE and/or GL Assessments.
Enable parents/ guardians the opportunity to choose Lagan College as your first preference and commit to our ethos and values.
First preference matters if oversubscribed ( see sub criteria)
Single Application considered for both grammar/higher ability entrance and all ability ( one school community)

Lagan College retains its Admissions Number of 200 pupils into Year 8;
Higher ability intake (70 places) and All ability intake (130);
Admissions Criteria for entry in September 2017 – Minister’s [DE] Guidance for 2017, has not been forwarded yet;
Transfer Booklet information for parents is issued in Autumn- available from Education Authorities
