  • Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging

from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).

  • Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals

and people. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

  • SARS-CoV-2 is the novel coronavirus that causes coronavirus disease

(COVID-19).

  • Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a new strain that was discovered in 2019

and has not been previously identified in humans.

WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS & SARS-CoV-2?

slide-5
SLIDE 5
  • Person – to – person spread (primary)
  • Close contact with infected person(within 6 ft)
  • Respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
  • Droplets land in mouths or noses of people nearby or inhaled through lungs.
  • It is possible a person can get COVID-19 by touching a contaminated surface or object

and then touching their own mouth, nose, or eyes – but this is NOT thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

  • STILL avoid touching your face with unwashed hands
  • Frequently wash hands and disinfect as much as possible
  • The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads easily in the community (“community spread”).
  • Community spread means people have been infected with the virus in an area, including some who are

not sure how or where they became infected.
