  3. NATURE DEFINES US It’s what makes Canada like no other place on Earth CANADA IS HOME TO: of the world’s fresh water 60% lakes – more than every other country combined of the world’s wetlands 25% including 3 of the world’s 10 largest wetlands of the world’s forests – we are 10% custodians of more intact forests than those remaining in the Amazon 1

  4. A CHANGING LANDSCAPE Our country’s biodiversity is being lost at a rate that threatens our future quality of life. SOME OF THE BIGGEST IMPACTS HAVE BEEN: • 65% of Atlantic Canada’s coastal salt marshes have been lost • In Canada over 80% of wetlands near urban areas have been converted for use in agriculture or urban expansion • And over 700 species are at risk 2

  5. THIS AFFECTS OUR QUALITY OF LIFE NATURE BENEFITS US IN SO MANY WAYS: • Nature provides clean water to drink • Forests clean our air and absorb greenhouse gases • Wetlands and natural shorelines regulate flooding • Natural spaces provide a place for recreation • Spending time in nature improves health and well-being • Pollinators fertilize the plants we eat • Urban green spaces prevent heat islands 3

  6. THE NCC SOLUTION NCC acquires land through purchase, donation, or easement and PROTECTS IT FOREVER. We do this so that future generations of Canadians will enjoy the same rich, natural world that we are privileged to enjoy today. Our vision has remained focused for over 50 years. 4
