▪ The Climate Investment Opportunities in Cities report is the fourth in IFC’s flagship series, and seeks to identify the investment potential in cities in emerging markets based on their stated goals and targets for emissions reductions broadly and by sector. ▪ The report analyzes climate-related targets and action plans in emerging market cities in IFC’s six regions, identifying opportunities in green buildings, public transportation, electric vehicles, waste, water, and renewable energy – key sectors for climate action. ▪ It also discusses how cities are building urban climate resilience; explores illustrative examples of priorities, actions, and investments through six city deep dives; describes how cities are financing their climate actions; and highlights cross-cutting themes including how data can help cities achieve their objectives, and transit-oriented development as an approach to urbanization. ▪ The report draws from the expertise of various organizations working on both climate change and urban issues, such as C40, ICLEI, WRI Ross Center for Cities, MIT Senseable Cities Labs, the Multilateral Development Banks and others. ▪ With cities accounting for over 50 percent of the global population and producing over 70 percent of global emissions, not only are urban populations most vulnerable to climate impacts but also mitigation actions taken by cities will have a disproportionate effect. Therefore, cities must take the lead in climate action.
Mitigation & Adaptation Plans ❖ Reduce emissions 30% from 2005 levels and source 30% of energy from renewable sources by 2030 ❖ Prioritize climate-smart urban development through its Spatial Plan 2030, including improving wastewater treatment, increasing the use of alternative energy- based waste management technology, developing better public mass transit, and building resilience to national disasters ❖ Gather data on the city’s emissions, simulate trajectory to 2030, and develop a Mitigation Action Plan focused on green spaces, sustainable transport, green energy, wastewater management, and solid waste management, as per the city’s Regional Action Plan for Reduction of Greenhouse Gases ❖ Invest in infrastructure to build resilience to flooding through the Jakarta Coastal Defense Strategy and Flood Mapping, and the Jakarta Emergency Dredging Initiative
