Stats:

  • Total student population:

1,600

  • 68% reduced/free lunch

status

  • 40% minority
  • LHS is one of the smallest

and most successful International Baccalaureate schools

  • 1957 Gym converted into a

new state of the art Fine Arts Center

PRESENTATION TITLE

The Challenges

  • Needed EMS in uncontrolled

facilities

  • Needed to replace a problematic,

unsupported EMS system in a new facility

  • Needed to reduce energy costs
  • Needed new HVAC & Lighting
  • No Budget
  • How can we make this

happen?

slide-5
SLIDE 5

PRESENTATION TITLE

The Solutions

  • Start with an energy audit

Utility payed 50%

  • Develop a Project List that would

lower the payback

  • Get Funding!

ConserFund Plus Utility Incentives (Over $60,000)

PRESENTATION TITLE

What made this a good project?

  • Clear Goals
  • Willingness to try new things
  • District completed most of the

work in-house

Set Point too low and in manual “hold” Set Point too low and in manual “hold” Manual “hold” “Emergency Heat” selected There are often many issues when thermostats are accessible. These are just a few of the

  • findings. A total of 15 were found with some
  • issue. Many thermostats were in “hold” meaning

the HVAC system never turns off. Some had the fans in manual causing them to stay on, emergency heat selected (uses 3 times the energy of a heat pump!), and set points that were

  • utside the typical ASHRAE recommended band.

An EMS could rectify all these problems.

HVAC Findings

Heat Mode Cool Mode Simultaneous Heating and Cooling in the same space! There are 4 3-ton heat pump units for the band room. One thermostat is in the band director’s office with the door closed and is in cool mode. The other is out in the main practice space and is in heat mode. The thermostat should probably be moved out of the

  • ffice and these interlocked to prevent this from happening. An EMS could easily address this issue.

59% of all the fluorescent lighting at LMS is still T12, mostly the older section of the building (classrooms) and the hallways. The dance studio and facilities shed are also T12. LHS has T12 in the robotics and agriculture building.

Lighting Opportunities

slide-13
SLIDE 13

PAGE LAYOUT

Kitchen T12 lighting is still being used in all the hallways and the older section of the building (all areas within the red outlined rectangles).

Lighting Opportunities

slide-14
SLIDE 14

PAGE LAYOUT

All the T12 lighting in the middle school, with the exception of the kitchen, is 4-bulb. Not only is this very poor (and quickly becoming

  • bsolete) lighting, it is far too many bulbs for the hallway applications (they can typically be 2 bulb fixtures).

Lighting Opportunities

slide-15
SLIDE 15

PAGE LAYOUT

The metal halide lighting in the gym offers an excellent opportunity for an LED upgrade. The 150w “UFO” fixture would be a good upgrade, requiring no guarding, because of its rugged construction.

EC motors are very efficient (50% less wattage than a typical shaded pole motor) and can offer multiple speeds Controls the speed of the 2 speed EC motors to slow down to minimum possible speed when the compressor is not running. Compressor only operates about 40% of the time, the other 60% the Frigitek controller can operate the EC motor at a much slower speed, reducing energy consumption by as much as 90%.

The cafeteria dishwasher is no longer used. The HW load has decreased substantially, and there is a large NG water heater with a recirc pump. There is

  • ne sanitizing sink in use. A condensing tankless commercial system would

be a strong choice for this application.
