SLIDE 2 COURSE OBJECTIVES
This short course is designed to equip the participants to create a growth oriented startup. Various aspects related to team building, product-market fit and financing are discussed. Participants who successfully complete the course will be awarded a certificate.
PROGRAM
During the first two sessions the course will discuss what does it take to build great companies? How teams are formed in early stage start-ups and how to hire people and motivate teams to perform? We will talk about different aspects of building the product and finding the market
- fit. We will also address various aspects of go to market and building
direct sales and channel teams and how to compensate these teams especially during early days when the product is fully not baked yet. Different aspects of marketing will be addressed that talks about product marketing, positioning, customer tools, pricing, analyst relationship etc. Finally, we will discuss in detail the revenue growth and key triggers that need to happen during the crossing the chasm phase. We will take several contemporary examples of companies during our discussions. In the third session, we will primarily focus on different aspects of fund raising how companies are valued by investors especially during early
- stages. What is the magic of valuations when there is no revenue and
why different companies get different kinds of valuations. We will talk about Series A, B C rounds of funding and also various exit scenarios. We also talk about IPO, M&A and asset sale if the company doesn't succeed and eventually not able to raise money and fail. We will take various examples of today's companies during our analysis and
- discussions. We may not disclose all the company names to maintain
confidentiality. In the final session, students will present a business plan (based on a company that already exists or students own idea). We will provide a template of the business plan at the beginning of the class as well as
- examples. Depending on the number of students in the class, we will
form groups of 4-5 students per group.

B V Jagadeesh, MD, KAAJ Ventures, San Francisco, CA, USA
- Mr. B V Jagadeesh is a highly regarded business executive
with a proven track record of managing and building market leaders. Before starting KAAJ Ventures, Jagadeesh served as Group Vice President and General Manager of Citrix Systems' Application Networking Group. Prior to the acquisition of NetScaler by Citrix Systems, Jagadeesh served as President and CEO of NetScaler. During his tenure, Jagadeesh grew NetScaler to become the market leader in Application Delivery Systems until its acquisition by Citrix for $325M in 2005. Prior to NetScaler, Jagadeesh co-founded Exodus Communications. During his tenure at Exodus, he successfully helped the company grow from start- up to a leader in the Web co-location market and was instrumental in leading its highly successful initial public offering (IPO). Jagadeesh has also held various management and engineering positions at Novell and
- 3Com. Jagadeesh is also an angel investor since 2000 and on the board
- f and advisor to several Silicon Valley technology companies that are
also funded by top-tier VCs. He is working very closely with several VCs in Silicon Valley and in India.
