Seed Age Trial

  • Impact of seed crop management on the subsequent

processing potato crop

  • 4 management factors tested, 2 levels of each:

– Planting date – Harvest date – Moisture regime – Storage regime

  • All combinations of the 4 factors x 2 levels
  • Each run of the trial takes two years to complete
slide-3

Seed Age – Year 1

  • Apply treatments in year 1,

test impact in year 2

  • All combinations of the

factors for 16 treatments

Seed Age – Year 2

  • Year 2 Test Plots

– Randomize and Replicated – Factorial

  • 4 main factors

(plant, harvest, moisture, storage)

  • All interactions

– All test plots treated equally – Emergence, stems, yield and quality

Summary

  • Early planted seed did have more stems and

fewer tubers >12oz

  • Storage temperatures had the most significant

impact on processing crop performance

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Summary

  • Aging of seed by altering storage

temperatures in last month has a significant impact

– Emergence a few days earlier – No impact on yield, BUT – Changed the size profile to smaller tubers

  • The constant storage treatment

– Emergence catches up by about 30 DAP – 10% more tubers > 6oz
