What is PSEO?

 Offers high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to take

courses at eligible post-secondary institutions.

 Students must meet the admissions requirements of the post-

secondary institution.

 Do not pay for tuition, fees, or books.  Earn high school credit.  Colleges or universities may choose to transfer completed PSEO

coursework as college credits.

 10th graders can now attend Career and Technical classes

through PSEO if they meet criteria set by institution

+ Think Of PSEO As Two Doors

 DOOR #1  DOOR #2 Application ACCUPLACER

slide-12
SLIDE 12

+ DOOR #1

Your paperwork “stuff”

 1. Application  Check PSEO Deadlines  Each institution has different

deadlines

 2. Official transcript  Students must request an official high

school transcript

 Contact Counseling Office

secretary in person

 Allow at least one week for

transcript to be ready

 Pick up and mail or upload

with application

Remember – should be

11th grader top 1/3

12th graders top 1/2  3. Notice of Student Registration

 a.k.a. 3- part form (next slide)  Bring to Counselor AFTER section 1

has been filled out

 Allow at least 3 days for this to be

completed

pick-up and mail or upload with application

  • 4. Tests scores (if needed)

 PSAT, PLAN, ACT, SAT may be

required for admissions

 OR ACCUPLACER

 5. Balance sheet (if needed)

 Listing classes still needed for

graduation

Door #2 ACCUPLACER Testing

(if no ACT/SAT/PSAT scores)

 PSEO must determine your college level reading readiness  MUST check to see how the PSEO college wants this!

 Examples:

Normandale will send a letter to invite you to take the ACCUPLACERtest

MCTC will expect the ACCUPLACER to be a part of your application

U of M - Required of students who have less than one year of grades from a non-home high school (ACT, SAT, or PSAT)

North Hennepin – will send a letter saying your are eligible to take the ACCUPLACER  ACCUPLACER

 Reading, Writing, and Math test.  Students must test at or above college level Reading to be a PSEO student.

If students do not do well on math or writing ACCUPLACER, then they will not be able to take math or writing PSEO courses.

ACCUPLACER

Do on the College Campus

SLIDE 16

+You’re Accepted!  Congratulations!

 Now What?

How many classes can I take?

 That is up to each institution.  Some set a number, some leave it open.  Remember this Key Point

 You need to take between 5 and 7 HS credits each semester

2 :1 ratio Every 2 credits at college = 1 credit at HS.

slide-17
SLIDE 17

+

Breakdown Of PSEO & High School Credits

PSEO Semester Credits High School Semester Credits 2 credits = 1 credit (semester course) 3 credits = 1.5 credits 4 credits = 2 credits (full year course) 5 credits = 2.5 credits

slide-18
SLIDE 18

+

REMEMBER

Magic Numbers Is 5-7 High School Credits Each Semester

 EXAMPLE #1 Fall Semester  PSEO Class #1 = 4 semester credits = 2 HS credits  PSEO Class #2 = 4 semester credits = 2 HS credits

______________________

Total = 4 HS semester credits

** Need between 5 and 7 HS credits ** THEREFORE: Need at least 1 to 3 HS classes in the Fall

REMEMBER

Magic Numbers Is 5-7 High School Credits Each Semester

 Example #2 Fall Semester  PSEO Class #1 = 4 semester credits = 2 HS credits  PSEO Class #2 = 4 semester credits = 2 HS credits  PSEO Class #3 = 4 semester credits = 2 HS credits

______________________

Total = 6 HS semester credits

** Need between 5 and 7 credits **

 THEREFORE

 Do not need to take any more classes.  Could take 1 class at HS though.

REMEMBER

Magic Numbers Is 5-7 High School Credits Each Semester

 Example #3 Fall Semester  PSEO Class #1 = 4 semester credits = 2 HS credits  PSEO Class #2 = 3 semester credits = 1.5 HS credits  PSEO Class #3 = 2 semester credits = 1 HS credits

_________________________

Total = 4.5 HS semester credits

** Need between 5 and 7 credits **

 THEREFORE

 Take 1 HS class.

slide-21
SLIDE 21

+ How To Select Courses?

 Meet with HS counselor BEFORE picking classes

with PSEO counselor.

 Students may select PSEO classes based on future high

school courses

 Example:

 PSEO General Psychology instead of AP Psych  PSEO American Literature instead of English 11  PSEO Composition instead of English 12  PSEO elective classes like art, business

Question To Consider

Part Time Or Full Time

 If part time…

 Start or end your day at SLPSH  PSEO classes should be as early as possible, or as late as

possible.

 Pick classes as early as possible (i.e. 8:00am class) or as

late as possible (3:00pm classes) to avoid potential HS class conflicts

 If full time…

 Can all high school requirements be taken through PSEO?  Caution

 A 3 credit PSEO class does NOT fulfill a full year high school

course!

slide-23
SLIDE 23

+ How & when does my HS schedule change?

  • MUST bring official PSEO schedule to HS counselor.

 Before the end of the school year!

 If brought in over summer, no one available to review until late

August.

 High school schedule will only be revised when PSEO schedule is

  • received. No exceptions.

 Fall PSEO

 MUST have your PSEO schedule in before summer break along with

what classes you plan to take at SLP, if any.

 Picking fall PSEO classes without knowing when fall HS classes will be.  May have to ping-pong in fall.

 Spring PSEO

 MUST have your PSEO schedule before Winter break

 Will have to coordinate HS finals ahead of time as spring PSEO will often start

before HS 1st semester finals are complete.

slide-24
SLIDE 24

+ Student needs to be mindful of:

 Announcements/school happenings by contacting school

  • ffice frequently (952-928-6100)

 High school and PSEO schedules

 Embedded Health to complete.  SLP early release/late start days  SLP advisory days (PERIODS CHANGE UP!)  Final test schedules!!  MUST make prior arrangements with teachers/professors  Seniors must check in with counselor monthly  Seniors must turn in PSEO grades ASAP in May so diploma is

secured

Student responsibility

 Adhere to PSEO, high school, and state requirements.

 Drop and/or add class policy and timeline  If you CHANGE PSEO classes, must be OK’d with HS Counselor first.  Have the completed transcript sent to the high school counseling

  • ffice

 Book return policy

 CAUTION!

 PSEO classes worth 3 credits  Will NOT fulfill a HS course that requires a year  Example:  PSEO 3 credit Literature course will NOT

fulfill a year of English 11.

slide-27
SLIDE 27

+ CONSIDER….

 The PSEO process can be confusing/exciting/overwhelming  Consider the pros and cons of pursuing PSEO

 This STARTS your college transcript (this will follow you)  A 4 credit class in the fall is 2 credits at the HS = a full year.  How will that impact your GPA?  Example:  A 4 credit English Lit class in the fall  If you get an A, B, C, D, or F. That is a full year in your GPA.

 Use your resources:

 1. High School Counselor  2. Specific College/University Admissions Offices  3. MN Department of Education PSEO Website
