  1. RARE Webinar Poster Presentation Workshop: Part 3 Presenters: Katie Jensen, Beyond Celiac Benjamin Forred, Sanford Research

  2. Who Are We? • Katie Jensen • Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts • Master of Public Administration in Nonprofit Management • Benjamin Forred • Bachelor’s degree in Biology • Master of Business Administration

  3. How To Present Your Poster You’ve done all the work of the research, abstract submission, and poster design – this should be the easy (and fun!) part. • Invite people in • Tell your story • Conquer imposter syndrome • Repeat!

  4. Invite People In • Stand near your poster during breaks and designated times. • Smile! • Use welcoming body language, especially when talking to others. • Have plenty of business cards and handouts – but none can replace your presence. • Ask if they want to hear about your work. • Tweet about it!

  5. Tell Your (Research) Story • Advocates make the BEST storytellers; you can do this! • Know your audience. Researchers? Physicians? Advocates? Families? This will determine the tone and language you use. • Think about background: What do people need to know about your disease to understand your work? • Craft an elevator pitch and have it ready to go (more on this) – keep it short and simple! Aim for 1-2 minutes. • Use your poster as a visual aid.

  6. How to Craft Your Elevator Pitch WHY WHAT did you HOW learn NOT THIS

  7. How to Craft Your Elevator Pitch WHAT WHY did you learn NOT THIS HOW

  8. How to Craft Your Elevator Pitch • Give necessary background. • Tell us WHY (Overview) and HOW (Methods) you did this study • Pick your favorite data point or two and let the rest speak for itself (Results). • Focus on the outcomes – WHAT did you learn (Conclusion/discussion)? • What can be applied to other diseases/what more research needs to be done?

  9. Conquering Imposter Syndrome • Remember that YOU are the expert on your subject. Nobody else has done this work. • Advocates make the best storytellers! (Far better than scientists). • Social science is still science. • Researchers are just as intimidated by you as you are of them (and you are one of them!).

  10. Repeat! • Tell everyone who will listen about your work. • Be flexible; answer questions, and ask about their interest in your work. • You do not always have to present original data; you can use your poster at multiple conferences, or leverage it into a presentation.

  11. Remember: This is the fun part! • You’ve done all of the hard work already; this is the time to tell people about it. • Be enthusiastic, informed, and willing to share. • Be proud of your work! • Network like crazy.

  12. Want To Present A Poster? Accepting poster abstracts for the 2019 RARE Patient Advocacy Summit starting June 14, 2019 Deadline to submit is July 19, 2019
