The University of Poitiers was founded in 1431, making it one of the oldest universities in Europe, with:

250 fossils providing evidence of the existence of multicellular organisms 2.1 billion years ago. Research laboratory : Hydrogeology, Clay, Soil and Alterations. The oldest hominid in the world discovered in Chad : Toumaï "the oldest known man" (-7 million years). Research laboratory : International Institute of Paleoprimatology, Human Paleontology: Evolution and Paleoenvironment. Vinflunine, an anticancer molecule based on extracts of the Madagascar periwinkle. Research laboratory : Synthesis and Reactivity of Natural Substances.
